I think its August 21st because
A: They would be consistent with the pattern they used in wotlk (5 Weeks before release)
B: It would also make sense because it is the week after Gamescom
August 28th. Because of Guild Wars 2, and blizz always schedules releases around other games doing something big. It is also a week after they unveil the new cinematic.
Sep 4'th, because 35% nerf is gonna hit Aug 21'st (according to me) and they want to give another 2 solid weeks of Dargon Soil before people are waist deep in figuring out their class.

I think 21st-ish, in time to take a bit of attention away from Guild Wars 2 release and pre-purchase head start. Also, they usually release a pre expansion patch 4 - 5 weeks before the expansion hits.
I honestly don't think 5.0 will make any difference to Guild Wars 2 if Blizzard does try it because Guild Wars 2 does not have a subscription. I think Blizzard are smart enough to know this so they aren't to worried about trying to take it head on and that they can't take an actually GOOD subscription free mmorpg head on, unless ArenaNet messes their game up some how.

Aug 28 it is...Please be aware that with the release of the pre-expansion 5.0.4 patch on Tuesday, August 28, all raid lockouts will be reset. This means that you will not be able to extend a raid lockout beyond the week before the patch release.

So, wonder what's up with VPs when the patch drops? I have 50,000 VP across my toons, do they convert down to JP with those in excess of the 4k cap being turned to gold and all vendor items being for sale with JP like the pre-Cata patch. Or was that just a special case since they there moving to just 2 currencies (VP/JP) from the multi-currency system?
So, if 5.0 is the 28'th, when are we going to see the 35% hit?

I do not see how this will effect GW2 to much, anyone who pre-purchased will already be playing the game for 3 days at that point.
Because the majority of people do not pre-purchase games.
