The stam stacking arises from specific mechanics on hard mode fights:

1) If main-tanking maloriak during the dark vial phase.
2) Sub 50% heroic halfus.

Mastery is useless for these mechanics. I'm sure there are other examples, but my HM experience is limited to three fights.
