as far as I know, you only need a battle.net account with the beta application added to be eligible for the cataclysm beta, I know several people who are currently only playing beta and have frozen their "live" account until the addon.
I'm bored with things as they currently are in Wrath and my game time finally expired. However, I'm really interested in getting into the beta, and I was wondering, has anyone gotten into the Cataclysm beta with a frozen Wrath account? Or does your account have to be active for you to be eligible?

Aye. I believe you do not have to have an active WoW account to get invited to the Beta. You definitely do not need an active live account to *play* the Beta.
