Long long time reader and decided to finally post, I see a lot of people giving good advice on these forums and hope you can help me out as well
Recently my guild entered a stage of Raid inactivity and so I've been forced to PuG quite a bit. I've noticed other Mages with similar gear to mine usually beat me on DPS. Usually I top at about 4.5-5k, hitting 5.5k on certain bosses.
I see other Mages, as mentioned above, with similar gear breaking the 6-7k mark and am wondering what I might be doing wrong.
In 90% of Raids I will use my Fire spec, which I find funner to play and I seem to be more comfortable with.
My usual rotation is to get Imp. Scorch up, Living Bomb, Fireball and Pyro on Hot Streak. I use timers and counters to make sure Scorch and Living Bomb have good uptime and try to maximize the T10 2-set bonus as much as possible without risking missing a HS.
I'm not sure if my lower DPS is due to gemming, enchanting, talents etc but I'm hoping somebody can help me out!
mages are at a place right now that the only time Fire will out dps Arcane is in 264-277 gear....based on the gear your in on ur armory page, arcane is definetly a better spec as far as dps as it scales far better in the lower tiers of gear...
now do u want to play arcane?..thats up to you but when ur doing your comparisons to the mage next to you thats hitting for a few k harder, check the talents tab and make sure those mages arent themselves playin a arcane spec...
just looking at your post it seems ur rotation is ok..not sure how u manage ur CD's....gear wise, you have all the enchants...i personally am not a fan of +20crit/haste and usually see more benifit in Haste/Crit and SP....
do yourself a favor and download RAWR...google it...its a fantastic tool for mages and will really help
imho fire can out dps arcane in earlier gears, as long as you won't sacrifice too much to reach the hit cap. But if you're running a 10man group, arcane is probably better because you might be getting very few buffs from the group.
As for your fire spec, it's basically okay. I would take the points out of student of mind and put those in flame throwing and magic absorption. But it's a personal preference, wont affect much on the dps. For arcane spec, incanter's absorption isn't worth it now. You can toss it on other talents.
I hear a lot about the difference between Arcane and Fire and it's something I've looked in to. What I've seen is what you said LexyDK, in that Arcane will usually outdo Fire at my gear stage. To clarify, I'm rarely stinking up the bottom of the meters or anything and will often outdo some other Mages, other times they'll outdo me. I'm a big fan of Fire so I'm going to stick with it for now and see how things play out, move some gems around and so forth. Thanks for the advice on the talents.
I downloaded RAWR as per your suggestion and have been playing with it for a couple of hours, I've already noticed a few things in regards to gems in particular.
Thanks heaps for the gear suggestions Tschus. A little question - after powering my Alch I'm a bit strapped for cash, and was wondering which I should craft first - Merlin's Robe or the Leggings of Woven Death? You mentioned that T9 chest was the worst of the 5 but I'd just like to make sure.

Well, Merlin should last till you get T10 chest. If you are close to the numbers to grab T10 chest, I think you don't have to buy a Merlin's Robe. The mats should be cheap now though. Leggings of Woven Death, on the other hand is much more expensive, but it should be a BiS until you get to full 264/277.
So... it's your choice! XD If you can only afford one of them, then go with the leggs.
