    Moved to Tech Central.

Fraps is probably one of the best recording, what you post edit with varies.

Agree with Fraps being the best.

As far as editing software goes, I prefer Final Cut Pro. But obviously that isn't possible unless you have a Mac.

The most popular Windows software is Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, and Avid Pinnacle. Avid Pinnacle, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro are all widely used in the professional market, and thus have an high price tag. But most of them have a more limited, non-professional version that is more reasonably priced.
If your looking for free, I would use either iMovie if you're on a Mac, or Windows Movie Maker for Windows.

Edit: I should mention that Sony Vegas also has a fairly high price tag, but its market share in the professional market has dramatically decreased in the past few years, almost to the point where no professional studio uses it any more. Having said that, it is becoming increasingly popular in the non-professional market for some reason that I can't understand, because I think its crap hehe.

FRAPS is the best recording software in general for computer media, however it is not free. It is lightweight and has a lifetime membership with access to updates so the fee you pay is a one time thing.

However you have to realize, videos as they are recorded aren't very usable (for instance I think the raw recorded data I have of a Lich King kill is around 20GB). You have to get encoding software to compress it and the appropriate codecs for compression.

And where is this, cause I'd be curious myself on that one.

All of the links that I've found include download links for a keygen, and thus illegal. Basically the definition of software piracy.
If Sony caught you then they could slam you hard for stealing. Luckily, they probably won't take the time to do so unless you were selling the videos you created.

Still, being the software developer I am, if you use the software just buy the damn thing. Even though I hate Vegas, people spent hours of their time coding the program, and their job depends on selling the program they developed.

Yes, there are several variations of downloading from a torrent or using a keygen to turn a trial version into a full version. Both of which are illegal. If there is a legal way you would have to be more specific. If there isn't I would not be endorsing piracy on a public forum.

Since there likely isn't a legal way to get that software for free, allow me to provide you with a legally free alternative. If you just need encoding and some simple filter functions, use VirtualDub as an encoder. As an open source project it is free to use for the public, it has a GNU General Public License.

You won't be able to do as many fancy effects as a product like Sony Vegas (which sells for $500), but you will be able to encode your videos, add/change audio, and add basic filter effects.

I don't disagree. I have an older, paid version of vegas I got secondhand for cheap that's legal. I saw the video when a friend directed me to it, and wondered why Youtube didn't pull the video down because it's illegal.

Well, if you read the guys post, in a lawsuit in Australia someone WON with the "educational purposes" line of reasoning, making sony's copyrights basically null and void for the software. It also made it so Microsoft now has to sell full versions of windows 7 as "educational versions" ON THE SHELF of retail stores for less than a hundred bucks. No ID, no nothing, just walk in and buy it for next to nothing, complete with support and all features.

Anyway, the guy posting the videos posted all the legal stuff and youtube won't pull it down. Even though it's still a nono in the US, the aussies can get it for free, and do it legally.

    Messed up.

As for recording software, just sign up with www.xfire.com, the xfire gaming client has an amazing recording feature built into it, and xfire is completely free to use, unlike the free version of fraps which has limited features and watermarks your recordings.

I have Camtasia Studio 7 for recording. The product can be found cracked as well as most of the ones that will probably be listed here. The Camtasia Studio 7 comes with a recorder and an editor. It allows videos to specifically be rendered and processed for HD Youtube videos and many more selectable options. It is very high quality and I would say it is the best recorded I have used so far.

Please, we don't need more piracy references. "The product I use is available for $299 and I like it" will suffice. We don't need to promote illegal activities.
