    Thunderclap Aoe damage question

I believe that thunderclap damage isn't fixed because it does more damage on a few mobs than it does on groups of mobs. When I AOE 8 mobs, my thunderclap does 800 damage on each of them, but when I AOE 30 mobs, my thunderclap does only 350 damage on each of them. Am I right?

    How AoE works:
    1) Calculate damage per target (include miss & crit) = (1)
    2) Calculate number of targets that the spell hits = (2)
    3) If (2) > 10, multiply (1) with 10/(2)
    4) Apply Damage
    5) Profit!!

    In your case:
    1) 800 damage per target
    2) 30 mobs
    3) 800 * 10/30 = ~267 damage (350 damage would be around 23 targets)

In other words, excluding crit and miss, the maximum damage you can do per Thunderclap 'cast' is 10*800=8000.

I always thought making this apply to thunderclap is ridiculous. More mobs, so I should do less damage to them so its even harder to tank them, right? /scratch head

IMO its setup like that so a tank will know better than to pull more than he can keep aggro on. a checks and balances system if you will. So if you're pulling lets say 30 mobs and you cant keep aggro on them, then maybe next time don't pull as many?

if your 800 damage Tclap is spread out to 30 targets and starts doing 267 damage, the DPSs AOE spell is going to be reduced to 33% of its original value too, so that the ratio on the damage is the same, if anything tanking more targets might be easier since there is the threat coefficient part of Tclap that may not be divided when hitting over 10 targets, i dont know about that. but if you can keep AOE threat over a certain DPS at 10 targets, you will also be able to keep it at 400 targets, assuming you have more than 1 FPS when you get to 400 targets

While DPS does suffer the same reduction on damage if they are using AoE abilities, healers do not. Healing threat remains constant at 50% of effective healing applied to all mobs in combat. So tanking 30 mobs may be easier for you to hold aggro off the DPS, but in turn it is also harder for you to hold aggro off your healer. Bottom line, don't bite off more than you can chew.

    1) Healers start to divide their healing threat after the first, you only do so after the 10th mob. If you can't keep AoE aggro from a healer, don't bother tanking single-target
    2) Thunderclap tons of mobs is great because of Deep Wounds. DW does not share the same reduction and as such, can tick for more than TC originally did. DK diseases work in a similar way.

    this is true

Tcap 267 dmg to 30 targets
AoE Dps lets say Rain of Fire and lets say is 800 dmg to 8 and 30 is 300ish to 30 mobs (math maybe off)

threat should not be a problem because dps will have the same reduction as you and tcap has more threat so even though RoFire (or any other aoe) is constant and tcap is once every few holding should be fine

also unless your healer is a god you should never pull 30 mobs in a heroic lol
