The purple number

Ok, so when I damage someone, I get either the uncommon white, or yellow. When I get damaged, I get a red number. When I get heals, I get a green number. So what is the purple number about? is that my TPS? I asked people in the new groups and they're just as confused as I am

I've been told (and this could be of questionable veracity) that purple is magic damage taken, and red is physical damage taken.

Purple is definitely damage taken from magic. Red is physical damage.

purple is any damage that is not a normal melee swing.

For example on gunship battle since it is fresh in my mind, wounding strike is a physical attack but comes up as purple.
