Thread: Prot hybrid specs

  1. Prot hybrid specs

I've poked around the forums looking fro some decent articles on Prot Hybrid specs, and found some nice specs for Arms/Prot focusing on using unrelenting assault to spam revenge with the glyph. What I did have a hard time finding though was any Fury/Prot specs. Thus i thought I would attempt to start my 2nd thread. Now I may miss some kinks here, but criticism would be helpful in finding a useful

Currently I have this spec. It's first intention was for some surprise tricks in arenas, as well as allowing me to try some tanking as well. After doing Normal COS I found that i produced a lot of threat, from 1.2k aoe to 5k revenge spam. Now I'm seeing that my tank spot in raids (4th tank i.e. emergency/trash and 4 horsemen) may be more useful with a similar spec. Since I'm only needed for a few fights i figured that this spec with a few changes may be much more useful.

In COS I found Blade storm to be useful when we had lots of mobs that i needed to gain threat on quickly. Also the Toughness and Armored to the Teeth combo produces a neat increase in AP, that may surpass the 2% strength loss from the vitality switch to strength of arms. The avoidance increase may be useful in pvp against other melee combatant, since it would still apply. Finally mace spec is very useful for me because I use Titansteel Destroyer in dps mode and Hammer of Quiet Mourning
    New Spec
Some criticism would be nice, I think that this may be all around usefully.

Now to the other Hybrid spec, Fury. I understand that this has more problems then arms, but i do find the idea of smacking with a 2hander enticing. For this spec I'm thinking that the player would only be using it for off tanking or heroics, but may also want to dps. Looking at my prot abilities while wielding, in the above spec i noticed that all of my prot abilities can be used except for those with shield requirement.

The revenge spam cannot be used here because of the unrelenting assault loss, but this would allow for more abilities to be used in the rotation. Unlike in arms and Prot a fury build could also result in a much larger AP scale then either because the Toughness and Armored to the Teeth combo, Str/AP from the 2hander being used, and Improved Berzerker Stance. Now after checking a few abilities it seems that Revenge, Thunderclap, Heroic Throw would scale with this, while Rend and heroic strike's damage would also scale with the increased weapon damage. Unlike in arms if you have the Glyph of heroic strike, it should proc more often with Incite and Cruelty
Thus I came up with the following raid hybrid spec.

All constructive criticism would be welcomed, I would like to make great use of any of these specs, as it seems that Fury would provide much more De buffs while tanking, whereas Arms could have more leeway. Thanks!

  2. I honestly don't know how to even start breaking these specs down.

Decide to tank, or DPS. Overall you'll be hurting your raid's effectiveness more by not deciding between either one. The idea to be an "emergency" tank leads me to believe that there is a problem with the first tanks that go down, or the healers behind them. Overall you keep referring to using revenge as a DPS mechanic, and it really is not.

The best constructive comment I can make here is to not mess around with hybrids, we're not built to do it.
(5/13/53) - Awesome pre-raid AOE tank spec for instances

  3. The point of revenge spam is not DPS but Threat.
Secondly in raids I gennerally miss doing spider/plauge and thus land on DK wing, and as the 4th tank my usefullness is already inefective in most situations. I mentioned emergency tank because there is always the risk that something may happen such as an extra pack pulled, etc.

Allow me to paint a picture of where these specs may be usefull. Just b4 i wrote this post I was DPSing HVH with the arms spec. Our first boss ended up being the ethereal, and we didn't know the fight very well. thus our tank died adn one dps, but since I dps in my PVP gear (I know resil vs crit, but 1kdps is decent still) I was uncrittable and was able to switch to prot and tank the boss while dpsing him. Also now that I know i can tank a Heroic in this spec, I am now more willing to tank heroics with this spec without having the neex to respec every single time.

  4. As Tarkonn said, I guess that focusing on a goal is the best way to build a good character.

In my point of view your arm spec for spamming revenge is quite strange because yes your cooldown is now for 1s but you have no talent that improve your blocking which make revenge proc quite less than for a usual prot warior.

On the other side, it seems that you're not playing with a shield but you don't take the 2H talent which make your dps quite better as an arm warrior not talking about no cruelty and no rage generation which is quite strange to for a dps.

Now for the fury "hybrid" even if with a 51 i can't call this build an hybrid, you don't take prec neither weapon mastery talent which should bring you to miss a lot as a dw warrior.

Not taking DW spec as a DW warrior (so i guess because of titan grip) is also against all sinergy. If not DW, going to titan grip just to have a 2h and shield seems quite useless in regard of what you lose from not being DW as a fury warior (flurry, bloodthirst, whirlwind, death wish are all better in DW).

It looks like wanting to do to mutch things you're not doing anything that good.

Some hybrid spec could be playable but not in an idea of being the most efficient for your raid/instance group more for fun or some farm ideas (greater survivability than full dps spec and greater dps than full prot spec).
