    Less dodge more block?

Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft

As you can see I just switched some points from anticipation to the block talent, as my dodge is high and my block is low

    Make sense?

    No

The dodge from anticipation is always a straight 5% dodge. 5% dodge > 5% block.

From the gear I've seen, you have to sacrifice a lot of stats in order to stack block and make it worthwhile. Is there gear out there I'm just not seeing?

I'm saying if I drop 3 points in dodge, then get my trinket, I will go from 22% to 21%.

And because I have those 3 points, I get 3% more block, which brings it to 21 percent

    Isn't it better to have a 21 percent and a 21 percent, rather than 22 and 18?

Is it better to avoid 8k damage hit or is it better to reduce it to 7k?

    Yes actually.

1 - You don't need to avoid, well anything in current content
2 - You don't want to avoid anything in current content

Less dodge is more getting hit (and blocking is still a hit)
= proc damage shield = more threat
= get rage = more threat

Now once harder content arrives we may indeed want more survival talents and it will probably spell the death of the Deep Wounds / Impale spec for tanks because we'll need the points elsewhere. But for the moment, when the main thrust of the 15/5/51 spec is to generate more threat, putting points in Anticipation over Shield Specialisation is in fact counter productive.

I disagree. While gemming for avoidance is counter productive, I wouldnt go so far as skipping point in Anticipation or Deflection, because we still do want to take as little damage as possible (just enough to have rage), and 1% of avoidance for one talent point, that is a good deal. 1% of dodge is worth much more than 1% of block in item budget. If you want more block, get it through gear, and keep talent points in dodge.

Good to know that hurtful strikes arent current content.

As a corollary to the same question, I just picked up Gauntlets of the Master where I'd been wearing Refined Ore Gloves. I take it the consensus would be that sacrificing 2% shield block rating for 0.8% block plus some health is a good trade?
