A very specific question about Deep Wounds

Does the current implementation of Deep Wounds result in more total damage than if each crit got it's own DoT that ticked independently from all of the others?

I understand that when Deep Wounds refreshes early the remaining damage is added into the new DoT. What I am asking is if this process is just an accumulation of damage you would have done anyways, or if it actually results in more total damage done.
