Warrior tanking tips from a rogue/mage.

So I have really been hitting up the heroic scene lately. I scored the 25 badge neck Chained Military Gorget - Item - World of Warcraft, the ring from DK Keystone Great-Ring - Item - World of Warcraft, and gloves from Gundrak Horn-Tipped Gauntlets - Item - World of Warcraft

Mostly I have been hitting them with PUG's, I usualy get about 2/3 good pugs. I have had the occasional tanking tip from the DPS class and I thought they were funny enough to share.

The first was from a mage that kept getting one shot by Whirl wind in UP.

    Mage: "Taunt him next time"
Me: "your a mage, not a rogue get out from behind him and go to max distance"

The second was last night in Gundrak

Rogue: "What your not 540 Defense?"
    Me: "Nope I am 558"
Rogue: "well thats the problem you need to be 540 exactly, any over the defesne cap and you get crit more not less"
    Me: "/facepalm"
Rogue: "I have a level 80 pally with 3 epic gear sets I know what I am talking about"
Me: "Oh yeah what 3 gear sets is that, Defias, Fang and lvl 70 BG gear?"

    /facepalm

    that last one is priceless

i actually havent had many stupid tips from the DPSers, except for things like "why didnt you Taunt it?" "well, because taunt was on cooldown from when I saved you before, and you kept attacking the mob before it even got back to me

He was one of those rogues who thinks everyones class should be ready at the same time as his rogue.
    "Lets go"
    "Hurry up"
    "What are we waiting for"
    "Go go"

Was all I heard from him all night. Finaly a mage got tired of him and left the group. He wanted me to pass him lead so he could fill the spot. He got really mad when I said I have a warlock friend who is going to come in and show you how to DPS.

  4. Ah nostalgia ! takes me back to the days when i pugged alot with idiot rogues. havent come across that phenonenon for a long time these days. Though I do sometiimes bump into idiot DKs now. Still pugging is always a great way to keep your tank skills honed

  5. I've run with a lot of really bad dps, and some really stupid dps. I myself have a 60+ of every class in the game on my server, i know my way around my class and usually their class too. But i've gotten some real gems while tanking latly..

Mage - "Why dont we just sheep the other one?" The Romeo/Juliet fight in UK.
Rgoue - "Stop moving the boss, i dont want to get behind him"
Druid - "I dont battle res, i'm not a healer" (in a raid... talking about the MT going down).
Paladin - "Just cause the healer is down doesnt mean i should have to do it" patchwerk 10mann at 5%. (thank god a pug)

it keeps going, i've got a few choice quotes from every class.

  6. You know, I haven't had any really stupid tips from dps classes, and I PuG ALOT.

The only thing I get is "Rofl, Dks r terribad tanks, gtfo."

And I'm like "Oh yeah? Watch this."

There was only one really absurdly obstinate healer that with 3 other people backing me I couldn't convince this healer that I'd be fine for tanking. He was just carrying on about how awful Dk tanks were, was insulting the ignorance of my dps (they were some of my favorite dpsers too, that bastard), and eventually dropped group. He couldn't seem to grasp the concept that the Dk tank he had a hard time healing was probably just a retard, and that it'd be fine with me =/ Oh well.

  7. haha, stupid people ftw. there will always be an abundance of stupid people...and when i have the pleasure of grouping with them, most of the time, theyre my entertainment for the duration of the raid/grouping.

Guild chat right before patch 3 hit:

Mage - So they're removing crushing blows, so you don't need 490 defense anymore
Me - Defense only removes crits, so you still need 490 defense
Mage - I tanked through SSC, defense removes crushing blows
Me - I'm not going to argue with you, just hover over the defense stat on your character sheet and tell me what it says
Mage - They must have changed the tooltip cuz of the patch.

    AHAHAAHAHA!

Wow, I'm glad I don't get people like this. You know what happened the last time I PuGed (going into a H-HoL)?

Recruiter: "How much hp do you have?"
Recruiter: "Sorry, I wouldn't normally ask, but the last 3 tanks we had were all awful."
Arvandor: "22k hp, 23k armor, heroic uncrittable, and 30% combined dodge/parry before blade barrier."
Recruiter: "Oh good, we'll be fine then."

Just for the record, that group was AMAZING. I can't imagine how bad their tanks must have been that the rest of the group wasn't just carrying the tank through no problem.

And this is about par for the course as far as night owl PuGs on Twisting Nether go. I almost WISHED I had some awesome PuG horror stories, but I really don't.

  13. Ret Pally: Why are you using Demo shout and Thunder Clap on bosses, thats for AoE nub, wow your bad.
    Me: ......

  14. wow...that made me laugh.

i wish i had some stories to really commit too instead of commenting. but i always group with people i know so i never get bad comments. they know i know what im doing and if i do happen to do something wrong its met with constructive criticism.

Rogue: Could you please quit moving him around?
Me: Im trying to let you melee him from behind.
Rogue: Why? I dont use ambush, mutilate or backstab.
Me: You know what happens when he cleaves or parry your attacks?
Rogue: Dont worry, I have evasion, plus my parry rating is very high.
    Me: /Vomit Blood

Although I have 27-28.5k HP unbuffed, if anyone ever asks me about my HP when I say I'll join their group, I decline. Someone asked me my HP for going to a ZA fun-run the other day.. I mean, wtf.

People who care about a tank's HP only are a BIG turn off. If they ask me my def, I just say "trust me, I'm uncrittable ".

The only real PuG horror stories I have are idiots who couldn't dps their way out of a paper bag. I don't tend to get moronic comments. And pugs always seem a lot more reliable nowadays than when I was playing a healer... wonder why... *whistle*

I tend to avoid random groups exactly for this reason, too many idiots around.
    Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

  18. While I was farming Bloodsail Buccaneers rep, a healer friend and me started a group for heroic. The first 2 PUG dps that were invited left about a minute after they joined the party. Apparently they checked my HP, which was at 22k at that time. Next time they should ask if I was actually wearing my tank gear. I was farming in dps gear.

Generally I have miles of patience in PUGs, well not always but I at least try to appear to be calm and relaxed :P

Only memorable one was someone's mage alt from the top horde guild on Icecrown. I was doing the run for a friend who wanted rep from the instance and this guy was whining the whole time about how slow we were going (which we were because I was talking and laughing on vent with friends).

He finally pissed me off when he wanded the next pack while we had 3 mobs up from the first one. I ran that sumbitch so hard, he never had mana for the rest of the instance and was bone dry for the final boss. He thanked me for a "smooth" run at the end, I laughed and kicked him from the group.

    PUGs is good times!

I was running heroic UK with 19k unbuffed, 20k armor, 533 def. I died at the last drake and 2 handler group, every time. They couldn't keep me up. They weren't offering advice, weren't talking to me, just tried a few times then gave up after I criticized their healer for not keeping me healed. I mean, if I were crit I'd understand, but I didn't once get crit!

Turns out I was the n00b and was totally undergeared, no avoidance to speak of, low level items... it was a thread a few weeks ago here.

Just throwing in a story from the other side of the fence. Now that I'm geared very well for heroics and know the fights and tanking tactics better, I'm no longer the n00b. But I wish I could group with those folks again and show them how much I've improved...
