Questions about voice chat

Alright, I want to play with a gaming headset so that I can talk to other players in real time when I'm in the battlegrounds or in instances. However, I cannot even get the microphone to turn on. Do I have to download a special program in order to use the microphone, or what?

As long as your audio drivers are installed correctly, all you have to do is go into Wow, go to voice chat an enable it

I'm assuming you're talking about in-game voice chat for WoW. Make sure it is turned on by going to the sound and voice option screen. While you're there, take a look at the push to talk settings and the microphone input settings. IIRC, there are test buttons which will let you test your input and volumes without having to be in a voice channel with somebody else.
