Rhaina you do realize that calling his beliefs reprehensible is an opinion right? In his eyes they are not reprehensible and his opinion is just as valid as yours. Nothing makes your view more right then his.

Now, in this particular case, context applies. having that view over here won't work, but taking your view to his context would be as disastrous for you as his view in your context is for him.

I'm already sick to death of Shadowmourne. Mr. Always prepared (aka the Elite Gamer) has been going on and on abuot the damn thing. About how awesome it is. About how he already has all the mats but the special raid drops.

I just want to shout "YOU ARE NEVER GETTING IT!"

I feel sorry for 17-year-olds who are raised with a set of beliefs they didn't get to choose and then placed in an environment where those beliefs don't serve them well, and left to try to sort it out for themselves. Some do, some don't.

The beliefs he held are reprehensible, but sending a child who had been raised to think of them as normal to a place where they would only get him into trouble was unfair to him.

That's why I feel KIND OF sorry for him. He was given a horrible set of tools, and then abandoned to try to function in a place he was utterly unprepared for, and he was still a child when it happened. Given a choice between his principles and mine, I choose mine. That doesn't mean I can't also have compassion for the situation he found himself in.

Now, if he was still spouting that crap a year later, my compassion would burn itself right out.

Did I ever mention I hate interviewing people for job positions? With every interview I do my faith in people's truthfulness on their resumes fades.

Does it have anything to do with WoW? No. Everything to do with my Monday? Yes.

Grrrrr

We've got a thread about Shadowmourne on our guild forums now. I PM'd the Guild Leader giving him my thoughts on it, including Evol's advice of "You know who should get it. Just give it to them." I think it's the same kind of deal. I know who I think should get it. I also know of a few people who will get bent out of shape if they aren't given it (something that imo works against them in the entirely arbitrary calculation of 'deservedness').

The old British saying about suttee-pyres and gibbets comes to mind..

Maybe you're using 'felt sorry' in a different way than I'm understanding it, but I sure don't feel sorry for anyone who holds that kind of attitude. I'm not a big fan of anyone who assumes that another human being is a lesser creature.

I actually felt kind of sorry for the kid. He really could not wrap his head around having a woman in a position of authority over him so he flunked the three classes he had which were taught by women.

Really, he was way too rigid to be studying abroad, and it seemed like no one had warned him. Not that I liked his theory about stoning me to death, but he really was bewildered.

...you're more than welcome to go back to your country if you don't like our education system?

Back when I taught at the U of Oregon, I had a student who plagiarized a paper by copying an encyclopedia entry. When he appeared before the conduct committee, his whole defense was "It's not fair that she figured out where I copied it from. If she weren't so sneaky, I wouldn't be in trouble now."

He's right up there with the Syrian student who skipped every single class without dropping the course, and when I flunked him, told the department head, "In my country, a woman who gave a man an 'F' would be stoned to death. I do not accept her right to judge me."

My mother's advice has always been "Always anticipate what you tell people being able to be printed on the front page of the newspaper."

It's like the people I see at our university's conduct committee who can't fathom how their facebook and myspace information winds up in front of us....

I just don't understand how someone who posts about a WoW character on a Live Journal page thinks she was keeping a SECRET, and blames OTHER people for telling that "secret".

My mother told me once when I was complaining that some friend of mine told one of my secrets "She wasn't the first person to tell it." My mother is a wise woman.

Ok, I'm starting to associate "Well, things weren't going so well in my guild, but I thought I'd put some stuff in the guild bank to help out' with "our marriage was terrible, we didn't agree on anything, so I got pregnant cause I thought it would help us come together."
