As a new recruit being run through SSC, you gear up at three to five times the usual pace because no one else is rolling on your stuff, but with personal looting in LFR you get no such advantage. If your goal is to join your friends' T16 normal guild and you're looking at running T14 LFR for six weeks before you can even get into T15 LFR, that's not going to look attainable.
