4.0 Prot Warrior Guide Introduction / UI

Starting a series of videos on general tanking philosophy. This isn't going to be a guide on how to spec or how to gem your character, there is plenty of that on EJ/Tankspot. This is more along the lines of the thought process that goes on after you close EJ/Tankspot and charge in.

Hey, i have been tanking for a couple years and as far as being a tank goes i'm pretty good, great group awareness etc.. however this patch turned me into a poop one instantly. my gear is way above being heroics capable but also quite below the gear of icc gear dpsers (dps buff vs threat nerf not a discussion for here). Anyway, your priorities video is interesting. As far as which mob to attack first, i've always been good at that (reeling in 2 casters with gag order is very satisfying).

I have some questions though since i decided to look up your talents/glyphs to compare with what you are doing in the video.

A) incite, with your current crit rating of 2.23% does it really proc enough to feel comfortable with having 3 points in it? the idea of a nearly 1 in 5 shot makes it seem iffy.
B) cruelty, same question really i guess.
C) do you use devistate? couldn't see you use it in the video but you do have it glyphed.

are you holding the right mouse button down the entire time? i know you are using the mouse to turn because of the way you jump around but i never see the cursor..

Theres really no question if incite is worth it or not, and cruelty really just depends what you want from your 5 point thats you don't put into prot. War Academy, Cruelty, Blood Craze, and Field Dressing are all good choices.

Devastate went from being one of our most used abilities prior to 4.0 to now being just filler that I barely touch, basically just to keep sunders rolling or to fill if everything is on CD. (Only used 17 in that parse.)

just had a couple of successful heroics, made a macro tp use at start telling people to go skull then cross.. at least they have been told. i found that multiple trash without devastate was pretty easy but when it came to single target boss i needed it with everything else going on CD too quick.

think i'll pop some points into incite then and out of blood and thunder.. a great idea that turned out to be hugely disappointing.
Anyway, thanks for the vid it helped alot and now don't feel too much like quitting tanking (and thus probably the game). so cheers :D

Great videos. I enjoy how in depth you go on the various subjects that many tanks typically don't think about. It's refreshing to see how much attention you pay to those sort of details.

Question - what did you mean in the second one, on Sindragosa, where you said we can't 'throw around Vigilance anymore'? If I heard that right, I don't recall ever really throwing it around in the first place, but usually just putting it on my co-tank, or the highest threat dps, and leaving it there.

Prior to 4.0.1 I would use vigilance as a threat reduction tool through-out the fight, always keeping it up on the highest current dps which would change multiple times a fight. I was just commenting that now without the 10% threat transfer it should no longer be used in that manner.

(Obviously there were exceptions to the rule such placing it on the OT for taunt refreshes for things like grabbing valks on hlk.)

Fantastic vids! Im using your UI right now and i love it.. The only thing i diddn't heard you talk about. Is the Spel Devastate/Sunder armor? How do you think about them in your rotation?

Why is this in the HALP section? this looks like a pretty decent guide, I can move it to the Critical Guides section or the Theory section if you would like.
