Interpreting Recount

I'm looking for some good information, be it explained here or linked to another resource, on how to properly interpret recount information.

I'm trying to get the guild I'm in to progress past the t4 content that we're on and really encouraging our dps to bring out their potential. The thing is, I'm not sure how to gauge people's effectiveness using recount. One person may be doing amazing on the damage done portion, but doing terribly on 'dps'. The inverse is also true.

I recently specced fury for a h. bot run and was paying alot of attention to the meter and noticed that by the end of the run, my dps was about 600 (I know ... /cry), our hunter was reported at 800, and our lock at 1,000. However, on the damage done side, we were all quite close to one another. Why is this? I don't think that I was entering combat far before them and thereby skewing the numbers in that way (though, it is quite possible).

I feel like I really need to learn to interpret information I'm given to be able to more properly serve myself and my guild. All help appreciated.
