TankSpot IRC Channel

Initially I just made this a comment in Alent's blog about the shoutbox being removed. Ciderhelm apparently didn't have experience with IRC, so I wanted to give him something to poke around with before deciding if he wanted to endorse the channel or not. Since Cider hasn't showed up and it's been a couple days now, I'm posting this thread in the hopes of getting more interest from the cool shoutbox people.

So I got tired of no shoutbox and set up a channel on dalnet just to check interest and possibly let Cider get a feel for IRC before he decides if it's a good idea or not.

To access it:
Download an IRC client such as mIRC, which can be found for free at mIRC: Internet Relay Chat client
mIRC will have a list of servers you can connect to in it's settings. Select a DALnet one closest to you. If this puzzles anyone I can provide more technical ways of connecting.
Type /join #TankSpot

You should be in the channel. From here if this actually starts to take off you may wish to register your nickname so no one can steal it. /nickserv HELP will show you how to do that.

I'll idle the channel for a couple days to see if anyone even has any interest.

Me and Alent have been chilling in here for the last day. More shoutbox regulars should hang out with us and get this thing off the ground!

Web based clients that I know of offhand [since you're not usually allowed to download stuff at work]:

Mibbit: Ajax based client
CGI IRC: Based on Python and CGI
jIRC: Java based
And there are a few flash based ones floating around.

Major reason I listed more than one is because some works have differening plug-ins installed on their comps. Java's a common thing to have disabled. As is flash. Ajax is what the old shoutbox ran on, iirc.

I'm all for an IRC channel. I use IRC a decent bit at home, and almost constantly while at work. I'd love to see it take off.

Let me know how active this gets during work hours. If it works out I'll try to implement the portal for it here.

From experience I don't go into IRC because it's a guarantee that I will get absolutely nothing done. After work hours, we'll see =)

Yes it is pretty addictive. I know I'll be slowing down my raid tonight as I alt tab back and forth between WoW and IRC.

But why DALnet? Quakenet is the gamers choice for IRC! ;-)

From the original comment where I put all this:
I was going to use something like Quakenet or Gamesurge but it turns out that most major IRC networks require you to sign up through their websites to register your account. I figured that would just make things more complicated for the user base here since apparently most Tankspotters don't have oldschool IRC experiences. I wanted to keep it simple.

Also, since you mention having to sign up, you could also try the freenode server. A few other wow sites use it. Wowhead, wow-interface, wowace for example.

You don't have to be logged in to use QuakeNet I think. And it's very easy to register there, join a QuakeNet server and /msg q hello and you'll get the help you need to register.
