BB's Ulduar Death Knight BiS Tank Loot

BB's Ulduar DK Tanking BiS Guide

COMING SOON: ToC Update Now that MMO Champion has complete loot list up will make a new thread for ToC and merge it with this one.

Hello!
This is my Ulduar Tanking BiS Loot Guide, this is only a guide, yadda yadda yadda. I did a quick search of forums and couldn't find one so put my list up. There is mostly 25man Gear in here, with some HM 10man stuff, not all Agalon loot is know, so is subject to change

There is a change about Ulduar gear, as happens with most new tiers, and that is the changing on itemisation (especially hit, expertise, defense) from one item slot to another. This causes problems when moving from a previous set of BiS gear to a new item or two you gather from Ulduar 10 or 25. You may as I did, be sitting at a mere 5% hit, yet packing 44 expertise after replacing the 7.5 Gloves and Legs with the 8.5 and 8 counterparts respectively.

The 2set Tier 8 is a must have, much improved upon the old +10%crit on Plague Strike. The 10% boost in Rune Strike will be your main goal to get as fast as possible. The two pieces that fill this the best is the Tier 8.5 Helm and Chest pieces, both packing Blue sockets and having no real competition in terms of itemisation. The Helm slot is debatable, I will explain below.

The 4set Tier 8 is a bit iffy, more of a 51 point talent, it's good... but you don't necessarily need it to be successful. 5 Seconds of 10% less physical damage taken, on a 45 second cooldown, so a reduction of 1.1% overall, which I agree is very appealing, similar to the Tier 7 4 set. It's just that when I use AMS it's usually to guard against Magical damage not physical (ie Plasma Blast on Mimiron, Falcon Punch on Iron Council) and these mobs are usually casting so not meleeing the tank. More investigation needed perhaps (and yes I would defiantly use it for fights where there is no real use of AMS for magical reduction or I didn't need the hit offered by the non-set pieces)

CHEST
Conqueror's Darkruned Chestguard - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8.5 - 2 Blue - Parry + Dodge
[Breastplate of the Timeless] - 10Agalon - 2 Blue - Parry + Expertise (No wowhead link yet, new from agalon) http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/..._10_9901_3.jpg
Valorous Darkruned Chestguard - Item - World of Warcraft -Tier 8 - '' '' '' '' '' ''

No Choice, 2x Blue sockets perfectly itemised for progression.

FEET
Greaves of the Iron Army - Item - World of Warcraft - 10Mimi(HM) 2 Blue Parry + Expertise
Charred Saronite Greaves - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Ignis Hit + Dodge
Spiked Deathdealers - Item - World of Warcraft - Crafted - Blue, Yellow - Dodge + Parry

Threat stats and the 2 blue sockets make the 10Mimi(HM) boots really really great for general use, well weighted is all I can say. However I'd take the Charred Saronite until you get these, just because it's hard to make up a loss in threat stats this early into Ulduar while trying to boost Stamina and Armor, take the crafted assuming your gear is flexible enough and you can maintain decent threat.

HANDS
Handguards of Revitalization - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Freya(HM) - Yellow + Red - Dodge + Parry
Conqueror's Darkruned Handguards - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8.5 - Red - Parry + Expertise
Valorous Darkruned Handguards - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8 '' '' '' ''
Gauntlets of the Royal Watch - Item - World of Warcraft - 28BoConquest - Dodge + Hit

Freya(HM) ones are really awesome for avoidance, similar to the Sunwell trash gloves, however depending on whether you need hit or the 4set bonus you may have to take the Conquest ones or Tier.

HEAD
Conqueror's Darkruned Faceguard - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8.5 - Meta, Blue - Dodge + Hit
Helm of the Faceless - Item - World of Warcraft - 25General Meta, Blue - Dodge + Parry
Valorous Darkruned Faceguard - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8 '' '' Dodge + Hit
Ironbark Faceguard - Item - World of Warcraft - 10Freya Meta, Yellow - Dodge +Expertise

Tier 8 Helm and Chest are the two best piece to get 2set from, however the Faceless one is a good fit assuming you have decent expertise and hit,the other Ulduar helms have Block and other Warrior/Pally stats. There is the one from Freya10 that isnt bad, but the Ulduar gear has surplus expertise so it's sub-par if you have >30imo which is likely.

LEGS
Legplates of the Endless Void - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Agalon - 1 Of Each Socket - Parry + Dodge
Saronite Plated Legguards - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Kologarn - Red + Blue - Bonus Armor - Dodge
Conqueror's Darkruned Legguards - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8.5 - Red + Blue - Parry + Expertise
Gilded Steel Legplates - Item - World of Warcraft - 10FV(HM) Parry + Expertise
Valorous Darkruned Legguards - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8 Red Blue - Parry + Expertise

The ones from 25Agalon are BiS by a long shot, but that's to be expected. Saronite next, low on threat stats but the extra armor is perfect for pushing progression early. May have to take the 8.5 Leggings for 4set, however if you can it's best to have this as the non-set piece, due to the high mitigation stats on Saronite Plated Legguards.

SHOULDER
Conqueror's Darkruned Pauldrons - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8.5 - Yellow - Dodge + Parry
Valorous Darkruned Pauldrons - Item - World of Warcraft - Tier 8
Shoulderplates of the Deconstructor - Item - World of Warcraft - 25XT - Hit + Dodge

Tier has better stats assuming you have the other hit items.

BELT
Shieldwarder Girdle - Item - World of Warcraft - 28BoC Hit + Dodge
Indestructible Plate Girdle - Item - World of Warcraft - BSing - Red + Blue - Dodge + Parry

Crafted > Shieldwarder, however with lack on hit on other gear I'd take that Shieldwarder over it to maintain 4set if possible.

WRIST
Mimiron's Inferno Couplings - Item - World of Warcraft - 25FV - Dodge + Hit
Flamewatch Armguards - Item - World of Warcraft - 10FV - Dodge + Hit

Valor bracers v3, v2 being the ones from 10man FV. No choice here for DKs, shame really, but there are only so many plate items in one instance.

BACK
Titanskin Cloak - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Mimi(HM) Hit + Exp - Red
Cloak of the Makers - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Auriaya - Dodge + Hit

25Mimi one is better on ilvl, but is only better than the Maker cloak if you don't have decent Expertise, and don't need the Hit from the Maker cloak and obviously Mimi(HM) is hard, so you'll be sticking with Makers for a while. The Titanskin makes a very good Effective Health and Threat cloak if gemmed properly.

RING
Fate's Clutch - Item - World of Warcraft- 25Thorim(HM) - Yellow - Dodge + Exp
Platinum Band of the Aesir - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Auriaya - Dodge + Exp
The Leviathan's Coil - Item - World of Warcraft- 25FV - Dodge - Armor
Seal of Ulduar - Item - World of Warcraft - 10XT(HM) - Blue - Parry + Exp - Armor - No Defense!

Auriaya and FV rings are the best 2 to have until your guild can get HM Thorim, one of the easier HM encounters in Ulduar.

NECK
Bronze Pendant of the Vanir - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Freya(HM) Yellow - Parry + Dodge
Shard of the Crystal Forest - Item - World of Warcraft - 19BoConquest - Dodge + Hit
Titanstone Pendant - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Ulduar Trash - Dodge + Exp

The best BoC purchase right away, cheap and you won't replace them until your guild gets Freya+3 or you need some quick expertise from the trash drop, I highly suggest you make this your first piece of BoC gear if you already have the Helm and Chest even Valorous versions.

TRINKET
Heart of Iron - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Ignis 162 Stam - Use: Dodge
The General's Heart - Item - World of Warcraft - 25General - Dodge - Proc: DMG Reduction(Gossamer v2)
Royal Seal of King Llane - Item - World of Warcraft - 10Yogg - 155 Stam - Use: Parry

The Yogg stam trinket is on par with the General one just cos the General one has so much dodge, and its proc basically increases armour, it just works on Magic aswell. The Yogg trinket has on use Parry, which falls behind as we all know due to DR on Str>>Parry Conversions. I would be happy with JC Trinket and Heart of Iron for a good time.

WEAPON
Furious Gladiator's Crusher - Item - World of Warcraft - 2350 Rating - Red + Blue
Furious Gladiator's Bonegrinder - Item - World of Warcraft 1850 Rating - Red + Blue
Voldrethar, Dark Blade of Oblivion - Item - World of Warcraft - 25General(HM) - Red + Blue - Crit + ArP
Worldcarver - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Ignis - Expertise + Haste
Hammer of Crushing Whispers - Item - World of Warcraft - 10Yogg(HM) - Yellow + Blue - Crit + Hit
Aesir's Edge - Item - World of Warcraft - 10XT(HM) - Red + Blue - Crit + ArP
Abaddon - Item - World of Warcraft - 10Yogg - Hit + ArP

Waaaay too much stam the s6 2nd tier wep too pass up, not on the radar for myself and many others no doubt, so the 1st Tier is fine, any DK worth their mint should be able to gain an 1850 Rating and spend points if you're not too serious on getting a full Furious set. It is really debatable which is BiS for Non-PvPrs, the higher damage on Vold is nice, but I preferred my Inevitable Defeat over my Betrayer of Humanity for tanking, so I would prefer either Worldcarver or the Hammer of Crushing Whispers, for the Exp or Hit, respectively.
SIGIL
Sigil of Deflection - Item - World of Warcraft - 25Razorscale
Sigil of the Vengeful Heart - Item - World of Warcraft - 25XT
Furious Gladiator's Sigil of Strife - Item - World of Warcraft - 1950 Rating

The two Ulduar drops are ahead of the PvP ones, no doubt. Swap the Dodge one for FS/DC one depending on situation, even a macro for the 1-2GCD gap in a frost rotation. Note: The Sigil of Awareness from 25Naxx (Now available for Emblems of Valor) is better than Vengeful Heart for UH tanks.

it would be nice to have some finalization or consensus on the weapon of choice, when in BiS ulduar gear.

Personally its a toss up between these 2 for me
Worldcarver - Item - World of Warcraft

Rune Edge - Item - World of Warcraft

there are others that could work, but i also want to consider the fact they might be better itemized for dps classes.

Consider respacing some of your comments to streamline the formatting of this. Other than that. Nice to see a DK gear list to go with our paladin/druid/warrior guides. Will insert this link into the stickies.

Earthshaper - Item - World of Warcraft Seems to be a pretty decent tank weapon, esp for threat.

Thanks very much for this post, this is really helping me formulate some decisions about gear, as I'm sure it is others.

I'd like to add this item in there for neck-slot. If you pretty set on Hit, I find it almost as good as the BoC one:
Mark of the Unyielding - Item - World of Warcraft 10Kologarn - Armor + Dodge

I know this is just a guide line but i'l ask anyway.

I was wondering what kind out weapon enchant you would be using whit that gear setup.
Since you only gain 575 defence from this gear setup.

Fourplay, just some quick math tells me that by using Rune of Stoneskin Gargoyle, you will reach the required 540+ defense. That's without needing to gem for defense. This is all without hard mode gear, as I didn't calculate with that gear.

Edit: Some quick checking appears that it would be even easier to stay crit immune with full hard mode gear due to the massive defense increase on the Titanskin cloak over the Cloak of the Makers.

I've actually found this link to be quite helpful in seeing how items stack up.
Wowraid - Death Knight Tank Loot List

I might value a particular stat differently than them in some instances, but generally speaking it's a great list. Good work though.

The S6 weapons should no longer be better than Ulduar weapons for PVE. In 3.1.2 alot of the weapons had their speeds decreased (3.4 -> 3.6, for example) making them a better choice.

It's about the MASSIVE stamina on the arena weapons, not to mention the 2 sockets that make them so awesome for DK tanks.

How does this gear setup compare with a DW tanking build? I know DW needs a little more hit rating, but I think it still looks good for a DW tank. Any opinion or advise?

I'm picking up an 1850 weapon tomorrow on my DK alt and wondering how to socket it. I already have one socketed for DPS, so this would be specifically for tanking. Here's my thinking:

1) Ignore the 12 ap socket bonus and...
..a) socket for stam. Lots of health is very nice
..b) socket for defense. Having a weapon with a lot of defense (and some resilience) would be nice for those situations where you need to offtank for a bit, then dps. 80 resilience + 32 defense rating + stoneskin gargoyle should allow for me to wear a bit of DPS gear in the rest of a pre-built set.
2) Grab the socket bonus and go for 1xblue stam, 1x expertise+stam purple

I think 1a is the macho choice, but 1b offers some interesting options. Any pointers on calculating how much defense I'd need from the rest of my gear if I went with option 1b?

EDIT:
Answer found here: A list of useful Tanking Formulas for Warriors - Dodge, Parry, Block - the 80 resilience on the weapon itself lowers the uncrittable target to 516 defense skill. SSG reduces that by a further 25 to 491. Socketing 2xRigid Autumn Glow (+16 def) would grant 7 defense skill, needing to reach 484 from other gear. You could arguably make up a further 11 defense skill by switching to sigil of the unfaltering knight (risks getting crit if you slack icy touch).

I think on balance, stam is probably the better gem option. The additional 32 def rating makes very little difference, the majority of the benefit would come from the resilience and SSG rune on the weapon.
