Sorry silly question but with defense skill for prot warrior - I know in the new patch we loose anticipation and some gear loose some def rating but I am a little confused as to what level I am aiming for again - is it still 490 to be un-crittable or the new 540 figure I have heard.

I believe I still just need 490 and that 540 will be for lvl 80?

Thanks in advance
BOTH! Hehe... 490 at 70, 540 at 80.

Edit: damnit Cider beat me.

Thanks to both of you, I was just starting to loose my mind as a casual player =) Just logged to the PTR and saw how my my defense dropped (from ~510 to ~470) so will have to dig out a few items from bank or re-gem/chant

How do I get my sig to show as Optimoos for example?

With the exact same code I can make it show just fine in my post, just not under it

your rotation should look something like this:

Shield Slam
Shield Block
Revenge
Sunderx2
Shield Slam
Shield Block
revenge
Sunderx2 (queue up Heroic strike if in excess of 50 rage)
Shield Slam
Shield Block
Revenge
Sunder
Devastate (queue up Heroic Strike if in excess)
repeat from Shield Slam right above, doing SS, SB, R, D, D, with Heroic Strike Queues

This is a pretty typical rotation to be sure, but you forgot to mention whether or not you have the two piece T5 Destroyer bonus: Increases block value by 100 for a single attack over the next 6 seconds.

This brings up my most pertinent question at the moment: Is it worth it to make sure you get that extra 150-300 damage on your shield slam from opening with SB. In raids and heroics (unless I'm helping a friend normal instance runs are pretty much over for me), you're almost guaranteed enough rage on the pull to start your rotation however you want. 1.5 seconds of waiting for the first hit to land usually won't be enough time for healer aggro and if DPS is getting to it faster than that, let them eat a couple 8k hits to the dome .

So, for T5 2 piece Destroyer bonus my rotation in a heroic is generally this:

1) Imp. Bloodrage.
2) Shoot at 'em.
3) Shield Block ON INCOMING.
4) It could change a little here, depending on CC.
A)In a CC heavy group, SS the kill mob, revenge and heroic strike second kill, then try to move away from CC for TC.
B)In a group with no CC, 4th move will be TC to allow for some healing aggro by this point.
5)After the initial TC, I drop into my normal rotation. (with good dps i only need one rotation per mob).

SB>SS>Rev>dev>dev

This ensures that the bonus damage from my set bonus doesn't go to waste by actually blocking with the added BV BEFORE the shield slam comes out.

I'm usually a high threat type off tank in raids, but I imagine the guy doing the main tanking usually wants to use this rotation also.

This of course all changes soon but it's nice to talk about it.

Question: I've heard references to parry gib (specifically that you don't want to stack parry because of bosses parry gibbing you), and while I assume that means some form of parrying that basically kills the tank I could use some explanation.

When an enemy mob parries your attack, his next attack can be hasted, which means the next attack comes quicker than it would normally. This does not happen because the tank is stacking parry.

When the tank stacks parry, he has a chance to parry the boss's attack, which hastes the tank's swing timer.

I think you misunderstood something about parry. Stacking parry in your gear does not mean the boss will parry more often. If you want to decrease the chance you'll be parried on a boss, you need to stack expertise. It reduces the boss's chance to parry your attacks.

Prince is what people are usually referring to when speaking of the dreaded "parry gib". It happened to me before. A parry-hasted swing in addition to his ability Thrash can create huge damage in a very short span of time. I think I took 23,000 damage or so in under 3 seconds after a parry + thrash (2 of the hits were crushes).

Hope this is helpful.

One main cause of sudden tank death (STD) is that a whole bunch of incoming damage bursting the tank down before the healers can heal him back up. If the boss parries you his next attack will come 40% faster (most of the time) - you add that on top of a regular hit and possibly some spell damage and down goes the tank.

Ok, I must have misunderstood something... so then there's no negative to stacking parry (except for it not being as effective as dodge).

The lack of efficency is the only downside, you can stack parry, just don't stack it ahead of anything else.

Ok, another question that's been bugging me (and too lazy to search for the answer):

One the new talent trees there's Improved Disciplines, which if you drop 2 points into it, will lower cooldown on Shield Wall/Retaliation/Recklessness by 60 seconds... Is it just me or is shaving a minute off of a 30 minute cooldown just not possibility worth two points!?

I just can't comprehend how saving 1 minute every half an hour being worth two talent points (or even one to be honest). So is there something I'm now aware of?

They have much lower cooldown's come 3.0/Wrath. Like 5 or 10 minutes instead.

Hi,

Are they going to lower artisan riding skill costs in wotlk? Is there going to be a new riding skill and how much that costs?

No and no. But to be able to fly your flying mount in Norhtrend, you have to pony up 1k gold for "Cold Weather Training" when you hit 77.

What do you guys think about the darkmoon card: vengeance for a prot warrior in the Xpac? Seems like prices are falling for the cards, but the aces may be hard to get when no one is farming the outland dungeons anymore.

Going into Wrath at 70 with the Stormherald, which is a better use of points, Mace Specialization (your attacks ignore 3% of the enemies armor) or Commanding Presence (increases the melee AP of your battle shout by 5%) for soloing?

In the beta you should get crit immunity from talents alone. -6% chance to be crit is already covering the 5.6% that bosses have against you. unless you're fighting mobs much higher level than you, druids got it made in that department =]

Ahhh, ok, thats probably my problem, i have a habit of picking fights with things that are 4 to 5 levels above me.

Note to self: armor and health does not make one immortal

First of all love the website, spent all day reading it...and no...i'm not in work...honest.

My question is this (Sorry if its in the wrong place):

Strength is becoming a more important stat in WOTLK, more block, attacks scaling with AP etc.

My current Prot Warrior gear is 2 x T5 (Head/Shoulders) and 1 x T6 (Gloves), 2 x Badge Items (Legs/Chest), the rest being various drops from SSC/TK/MH.

Not alot of my gear has +Str, infact the only items are the T5/T6 that i currently have. My AP is around 650 at the moment, i don't have problems with threat in MH/BT at the moment, so it's all good.

Will i need to think about new gems or possibly swapping some of the kit i currently have with older gear to achieve similar threat in raw damage when the patch arrives?
