Windows 7 update stalled at transfering files

I have this laptop and a desktop, both were running vista 64 bit and I ordered the update to windows 7 home premium for both.

Did it on my laptop first and process took abotu 40 minutes and worked flawlessly.

last night before I went to bed I started it on my desktop. Woke up this morning at it was stuck around 65% through 'transferring files' and making no progress. I left it on and came to work so I am hoping it will fix itself before I go home but I am doubtful.

What are my options at this point?

I'd say format but that's PROBABLY not the answer you wanna look at.

I personally format if I'm installing a new OS. Crap always happens like that when I just upgrade. It's just simpler to get rid of everything. Short of that, you can reboot and see if anything happened to your older OS and see if you can't back anything up. Then retry the upgrade and see if it actually freezes.

It sounds almost as if something's hanging the system while installing. Could be your hard drive decided to go dormant. make sure that option's not on. It's a dumb ass option anyway.

I know the several times it rebooted during installation there was an option to rollback or continue with the installation ... It ~might~ work the same way if you just reboot the computer. I agree with Krenian about the hard drive thing ... stupid stupid option (but one that is, by default, turned on).

Nevermind...finally tried the right google combination and it is a known issue:

For anyone else that might have the same problem:

Important Do not use this resolution if the upgrade stops responding at a percentage other than 62% or if the log entries are not logged. For more information about how to open the Seupact.log file, see the More Information section.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. Restart the computer. Then, your computer will roll back to Windows Vista.
2. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
3. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.
4. Under System variables, click New.
5. Type MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS in the Variable name field.
6. Type IphlpsvcMigPlugin.dll in the Variable value field.
7. Click OK three times to close the dialog boxes.
8. Start the upgrade installation again.
