Size Problem

Hey Guys,

Sorry if this gets a bit long-winded, but I'll try to provide as much info as I can think of. The main problem that I'm having at the moment is that although my video is only 1min 43sec (with music in the background) it's coming out at around 3gigs which, as you can guess, is a small bit problematic when trying to upload somewhere.

I use both Fraps and Sony Vegas Pro 9

Fraps Settings:

Half-size
30fps
No Sound

I do record on a large enough screen 22" with a 1680x1050 resolution but, when I've tried recording at lower settings (i think I tried the 1280x720 as recommended), it didn't come out anywhere as clear as the tankspot videos.

Vegas:

I was using HDV 720-30p (1280x720, 29.97fps) but I've moved it down to PAL Standard/IMX Widescreen (720x576, 25fps)

for the Audio, the sample rate is 44,100Hz, bit depth is 16 and quality is Best. It's set to stereo aswell.

There are compression options, but I'm not sure what the deal with compression is. I tried one of them, and it did take a gig off, but the video wouldn't play.

I've also tried without the music (which I'm willing to put up with if I have to) and it brought it down to 321mb, but that still seems pretty large for just under 2 minutes of video.

It's probably something simple, but I'm new to Vegas. Any help would be much appreciated and, if I'm missing any relevant info, please let me know.

Ultrin

There may be an easier way, but you can re-encode your video with virtualdubmod. Brought my 4GB movie from Premiere down to about 30MB.

VirtualDubMod Hompage Get the windows version and install it, then open your .avi file. Choose save as, and choose the encoding/compression type. Probably want DivX or MS mpeg v2

You do have to use compression of some sort. The video your recording is probably (if not fully) raw uncompressed video.

Since I use Final Cut Studio and not Vegas, I couldn't tell you what settings to pick. But I usually just use the standard video compression codec that the Zune and iPod uses to play videos (mp4 file I believe).

Again, thanks for the help and advice. I've been messing around with compression codecs and have found that, with Vegas, the MPEG4 codec creates a happy medium between size and quality. I would use the h.264 codec, but I can't seem to find a site that will download a reliable copy (the last one that I downloaded contained a trojan, luckily my anti-virus picked it up).

But, ya, for annyone using Vegas, I think MPEG4 is the best.

The CCCP project I believe includes the H.264 codec. CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack
