I usually just go in and mark the random healer or caster whatever it may be and since i'm a paladin tank as long as they give me 3 second's I'll have a good jump on TPS to not have to worry about marking the rest as long as they go for the skull first and thats that.

i very much agree with donthoto. if tanking with pugs, marking can really save the day
other then that i dont mark anymore and rarely run with pugs, in fact doing our "fun-run" in naxx last night. not a single mark was set and bearly any "tact" words was said on vent = pure fun

Magic Marker FTW

The only reason I mark trash in Naxx is so the tanks dont get thier wires crossed and fight over same target threat, dps can attack any mob they want, I dont care if they are on the moon first or the skull.
We have about half a second before dps starts going nuts on trash, and aren't worried so much about kill priority so much as having the tanks working separate mobs. The addon Magic Marker lets you mark up packs in a super fast mouseover while holding down alt, haven't found anything even close to being that quick at marking.
So to reiterate,
don't worry about marking proper kill order, the dps already knows which mobs need to be downed first.
Mark packs just to get tanks spread around on different mobs.
And try out Magic Marker, it's the frickin' bomb.

I always find marking trash effective regardless if it may be redundant at times in heroics or old raids. I at least mark the first target I would like killed and usually the other mobs are halfway towards death at that time. Usually DPS knows which target should come first but that isn't always the case (or just may be my server). Then there is the occasional DPS that will comment "It would help if something is marked so we know what to kill" type attitude.

Just saying it doesn't hurt to mark the first two mobs that should be killed in a pack at least.

Another trick i found very usefull is to just tell the dps to attack my target, and when the target is down to 35-40% i switch target and the dps kill of the first one and i get time to get a good threat lead, and if they comply with this it basicly removes marking from the raid.

Target of a target and set focus make things a hell of a lot easier especially if the dps want to not attack the same target as the tank and start killing other targets willy nilly.
Get dps to have tank as set focus and all members have target of a target on.
it is really that simple and then only mark targets for the MT and OT.

Ok, just to be clear, because I've seen/heard this mentioned a few times, but not sure about how to--

Set focus--is that a macro command, and if so, how does it work? (I'm sometimes dps, nowadays) Would I type /set focus "name of MT"?

targetoftarget--You mean the checkbox in the character interface? And, again, what mechanics are involved? As DPS, I'd be selecting the MT (or OT), instead of the enemy target? And, it would then switch, as the tank switched his target?

Sorry, I know this is probably basic stuff, but I'm not that experienced with it...and, I've never really seen anyone explain it in any detail. It looks like something I'd like to try, as I'm sometimes having a hard time knowing whether I've selected the right marked target, as DPS--like a pat that's moving, and standing behind another one, or a large group.

(Ok, by detail, I mean, as though I'm a precocious child, learning English as a second language. Which, I'm not, by the way.) ;>)

You can make macro with only "/focus" (without quotes) and bind it to button m8.
