Paladin Tanking Trouble

Alright, I will just get to the point right here, Every Heroic I try to run, I end up failing in (Sadly even H UK and H Nex) but I manage to Main Tank Archavon on both 10man and 25man. I also Main Tank Obsidian Sanctum on 10 man and 25 man. Here is my armory link The World of Warcraft Armory

I realize that i have sucky gear, but being unable to run Heroics and Archavon not being nice to me, I have unable to be replace it.

You've negleted to give the specifics of your "failing". Are you failing to keep aggro? Are you dying and your healers saying you're too hard to heal?

It's hard to judge your gear because you may have not seen anything to replace some items, so they may not be by choice.

First priority should be the libram for emblems of heroism. At lvl 80, the 42 block rating on the old BC libram is worthless. The Libram of Obstruction for 15 embelms of heroism is worth 354 BV for 5/8th of the time and is the only tanking libram at the moment.

Secondly, your spec is pretty bad. Divine intellect and spiritual focus in the holy tree are terrible talents for a tank. Same goes for benediction in the ret tree. If you're having mana issues, you're not getting hit hard enough to need kings, put blessing of sanctuary on yourself instead, it regens a TON of mana on trash.

This is the optimal prot pally spec until 3.1 hits:

Well, to begin with, you should finish enchanting your gear. You're losing out on a fair chunk of stamina and avoidance by not doing that.

Then, heroics are not necessarily easier than raids. So, this part isn't exactly shocking.

That said, you should be able to do heroic Utgarde Keep and heroic Nexus fine in the gear you have now. You may encounter a couple of tight spots, but nothing that you can't handle. Serious problems in these heroics may indicate a problem with other players (unless you do something silly, like turning your back to mobs).

Well, i started my tanking career (about 2 month ago) with a very similar problem.. I was a newb until i found this forum. I finished hitting 80 and tryed tanking Heroic AN.... To my suprise i needed 540 difense and at least 26k Hp Unbuffed to tank Heroics succesfuly (people in my server are real hard-asses ive heard of ppl off tanking naxx with 22kHp unbuffed) they demand good tanks.. So me in a lot of greens and lower lvl blues couldnt hope to tank any Heroic. Thankfully i found this site and followed a guide to gear up for pre-naxx 5 man raids.. i farmed money and made some craftable epics and tada.. in a week or so i was geared enought to tank 5 man Heroics =). with 24k Hp Unbuffed... But than i had another problem.. I didnt know how tank anything anymore.. It was so different because some fights required different skills and tactics and i didnt research about them before i went in.. =/ so i learned the hard way. But here i am almost able to MT Naxx and working hard to and getting better gear everyday.

Alright thanks guys, I'll try out that tree you have, I was going off of a different tree that i found while searching for some good builds. Apparently that wasn't a good build . Also, i've actually been saving up for that libram so that is a plus.

I haven't been looking up some of the fights we get into and we normally wipe. So i'm gonna do as you say and study fights before i get into them.

Roana, what enchants should I go for? If you wish you could message me and i'll see what i can find.

Well, at least you came here to seek some advice. Frankly, I have a hard time sympathizing with you if you didn't read up on the encouters -- but at least you are trying to correct your mistakes. Most of the heroics are not difficult IF you have a party of competent people. I've wiped in H OK because people in my party didn't listen to me when I told them to remove a debuff that the Eye of Taldaram mobs put on you (Eyes in the Dark). The healer got silenced, it was over. The point I'm trying to make is no amount of gear will outgear stupidity. Take 15 minutes out of your day to read about an instance/encounter before you go charging in without any clue as to what to expect.

Here's some suggestions:
- Run regular HoL until you get the seal of the pantheon
- Run regular UP for Svala's Bloodied Shackles - Item - World of Warcraft
- Enchant the bracers with +40 stam
- Socket your glove with +24 stam
- Run with Blessing of Sanctuary on you
- Buff with one of Dalaran's clam chowder, Poached Northern Sculpin, Dragonfin Fillet. The chowder is probably your best bang for your buck if you're buying at the AH.
- Guru's elixer (cheap and + all stats)
- Elixer of Protection or elixer of mighty defense

Do you understand the basics of how line of sighting works on casters? Ciderhelm talks about it a bit in his lastest video. Are you marking pulls? Targeting casters/healers first? Have you macro'd your emerency buttons (divine protection aka bubblewall and lay on hands?). Have you macro'd/hot keyed your taunts (you have 2). Use the following glyphs:
- Righteous defense
- Judgement
- Vengence

Your 'normal' badge run should be nexus, uk, vh or dtk (which ever you find smoother). When you have those down (and you have your libram) move to HoL, UP, Grundak, then finally to OK, AN, HoS, Occulus. Its not so much that the last 4 are harder than the prior 3, just that they have complexities that you want to be comfortable in your own tanking before you deal with.

thanks Blitzkreuz I'll do that, i like how you explained it, made it pretty easy to read for me. Also headknocker, Thanks for those suggestions, I'll get the Seal, and the bracers, just the enchants might be tricky, im running low on gold right now lol, been mining to get some. I use BoS alot too and i always have a few Elixers of Mighty Defense on me. Honestly i havent ever heard of Gurus Elixer but i'll check it out. I've always known about the pulls, healers/casters first then melee. Macroed my taunts too and emergancy buttons im having a hard time trying to find on, mind suggesting any?

Hey guys. I've been tanking with my paly from lvl 10 to 80. I never had any troubles tanking until I tryed heroics. I've been searching tankspot a lot, tryed many things, spent tons of gold for the right pre-H gear (e.g. gems, enchants, def required, etc...) and frankly, this post is one of the most helpful I've seen.

Just wanted to add something that may look basic for some but came very helpful for me: After setting, working, failing and asking alot around about tanking heroics, a good friend helped me figure out some points starting from the basics; I was pulling with my shield instead of running through mobs to reach the spell/range mobs, wich often occured in not hitting them at all or leaving them out of my aoe (consecration), loosing threat overtime on them. Running through to reach them when starting helped me a lot to establish my threat. Sending my shield once there helped me too (raised my threat and ensured I didnt miss anybody).
Using divine protection before going into mobs helped me as welldoesn't reduce your threat and prevents you from needing so much heals, wich raises your healer's threat over yours from the beggining, or at least closer to yours).
I also barely used my 'two hands' aka Hand of salvation and hand of sacrifice, before Heroics, and theses switched from the never used category to the very useful one.
And even more important, I realised that taking the time to analyse the situation before starting a pull pays a lot. People often prefer a smooth instance run than a one that comes with a repair bill. If I get pushed in the back for my speed, I calm down the pushers. Better have them quit because they think they're racers behind a turtle than because they're victims behind a noob.

Thanks for your post, and thanks for being the voice of probably many new 80's tanks.
