i've been loving the tankpoints addon for a long while now, whitetooth has put tons of research into it, calculating ratings and caps and etc, which i think is excellent. i chiefly use it to calculate what my numbers would be if i changed x enchant out for y, or a piece of gear out for b. the actual tankpoints themselves i don't make much use of, i make my own determination of the gear's value once i see the final numbers.

however, some errors in the projected numbers for the calculator have been cropping up, which is costing me some gold gemming to the projection, seeing that it was wrong, then gemming back to what i had before, etc. most user's attempts to communicate with whitetooth go unheard - and that's fine, with all the work he's put into this, the guy has earned some rest imho.

but, for my uses, is there an alternative calculator that is widely considered to have accurate theorycrafting numbers?

I used Tankpoints a long time ago and loved it. But I have since moved to this

Not sure if it is exactly what you want and it takes a bit more work to get everything the way you want it, but the math seems to be close enough for the average person like myself.

that spreadsheet is pretty amazing. i reserved judgment because i'm a paladin, and i also just wanted to put it through it's paces; but the database of gear stats alone is un-ignorable

it's certainly something to hold me over until a cleaned-up tankpoints gets released

I spoke to Whitetooth via email last week, when I wanted him to endorse /approve the user guide I wrote for TankPoints (he likes it). I motivated him to rev TankPoints on wowace, too by the way, so go get the latest version there.

I have also found an addon TankTotals that seems to mathematically match TankPoints calculations.

I'm curious; what errors did you find in TankPoints calculations? (I'd like to avoid them too )

i checked out your guide, pretty nifty, would have liked to have had it when i first tried tankpoints

re: my errors, at the time of posting this, i was using the second-newest version of tankpoints, because the newest had an annoying bug where i had to spam holy shield a few times, lest it wouldn't show enough block% on the sheet. the problem with that second-newest version was that agility was giving much higher estimates than reality. i knew something was off when agility was estimating giving over 2x as much dodge as, well, dodge rating, but i still regemmed out some defense gems just to see. ofc reality struck.

i did update to the new version that came out after this OP; this one's block% bug goes in the other direction (if i press holy shield, it shows me as having too much, haha). i decided that minor annoyance was worth having more accurate stats
