| | | WoWAce Updater
I use a number of Ace mods and have been using the WoWAce Updater tool to check and update Ace mods. Lately, the tool doesn't seem to work. I seem to recall reading that Curse-Gaming had a tool taking its place, but I might be imagining, lol. Does anyone know if the tool is still working or not? Thanks.

wowace is done from what i have gathered. they will still host any addons that were on the site when they stopped but they will not accept any new addons or even new updates of addons they already have hosted.
but i to could be totally wrong.

Yeah, they've dropped support for WoWace from what I've heard and it currently bugs out on me a couple of seconds after opening.
Curse client can be found here: Curse |

Yeah, pretty disappointing overall. I understand that the wowace SVN required a lot of cash flow to work but I'm reasonably positive there were much better ways to make it less expensive without just removing it.
I'll have to give WoWMatrix a try.

I've been using WOWMatrix for a while now. It's really the only option for auto-updating your addons on a Mac. It works well, though I've noticed that ACE mod updates have been coming in batches lately.

Aww bummer. I loved wowace especially for the open source feel to how they were handling things. The auto updater was just icing on the cake.
Bleh I guess this means I am going to have to go out and find a whole new slew of mods.

It was more than a cashflow decision. Kaelten owns WoWAce, Kaelten works for Curse. 2+2 = ?
wowmatrix are unethical jerks for the most part. They've have never once asked me about hosting my addons - this isn't a big deal, though I won't support people who get from wowmatrix because they are always behind when I am doing update cycles and it's a major pain in the ass. There are addon authors who don't use redistributable licensing schemes and wowmatrix does not respect their copyrights. They also are simply a bunch of deep links to the addon hosting sites we authors choose, so they are getting revenue from their ads while leeching bandwidth from other hosts. Of course, nobody besides wowmatrix ever sees a penny from their operation.

Yeah, only problem I find with curse is that there is a lot of junk around the site compared to just auto-updating with ace-updater.
I will have to try matrix as I've just been completely blindsided by my aceupdater crashes for the past week or two. Curse will probably eventually win unfortunately!
And satrina, obviously we know that 2+2 is up for debate. !!!!

I used to use MacAceUpdater - then switched to Jwowupdater after MacAce went the way of the Dodo. (Jwow is Java-based and platform independent). I'll have to take a look at Wowmatrix, but I'm not too sad just updating manually for now.
I really, really dislike the Curse site and prefer WowInterface, but what can you do? Many of the Ace mods are hosted on WowI as well, but not all.
Edit: after reading Satrina's post and viewing the Wowmatrix site, I don't think I'll use it.

The problem with WoWMatrix is that it's so useful to users. Nobody wants to hop between addon sites, and of course the major sites don't want to corroborate to make a common downloader.

In all honesty, as long as Curse doesn't get its client straight, I won't be using it. Standalone libraries are a royal pain in the ass to use with Curse client, it doesn't even recognize most of my (100% ACE-based) addons and I can't befriend myself with the constantly running background service.
Sure, this is a purely subjective opinion and WoWMatrix would be as suspicious as Curse with its single .exe file, but at least it found all my addons.
Besides my personal resentiments, I took the effort to prepare my addon folder for the upcoming patch and switched from standalone libs to embedded. The method used was described in the EJ thread regarding wowace.com closing its doors, latest posts.
I respect the concerns Satrina (and other addon authors) brought up, but as already mentioned, usability is a must-have, and I just don't see it with Curse.

Are there any working Mac updaters?
Or am I stuck with manually entering every mod's Curse address into JWoWupdater?

Eh, I have always used a buttload of mods but never auto updated. I like the WowAce site, I just make a list and go shopping. Its time consuming but meh.
So, the auto updater is going away....what about the site its self? Can I still go grab fresh versions at Wow Ace or is that dead now too?

the replacement for the updater is curses client and it's a royal pain in the ass.. crashes alot, difficult to use and all around .. bleh.
i liked the old WowAce updater.
WoWAce often has more updated versions than Curse anyhow.
