SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Business -- DivX to dump video-sharing Stage6 service
This is rough for me as a movie creator. Stage6 is the high-definition video I embed movies into this site with, and I'm actually going to lose a few valuable movies as a result of this.
But, there's plenty of places where this is
blatantly their fault. First, DivX originally marketed itself to pirates, creating an enormous stigma from people who would have otherwise promoted there. Second, to this day they let themselves get bogged down by pornography on their servers, a service which doesn't net Stage6 customers but creates heavy bandwidth strain. Third, the total lack of advertising embedded into their work -- while nice for us -- is painful; files of this size aren't free, and people would have understood that.
Too bad. I'm disappointed, though I can't say the money we spent on the codec and DivX license for TankSpot have been anything but good for us. Zul'jin alone has brought in thousands of new visitors.
