Change is inevitable

First off I want to say Merry Christmas to everyone. I hope everyone here is able to spend time with their loved ones and enjoy the company. I wish you all the best of days and memories that come with the holiday.
I've read back through my old blogs, and I can honestly say I've come a long way since that first ZA adventure. TBC ended up with me tanking for a number of t5/6 pugs and picking up a couple pieces of gear through it. Heading into WotLK release I had left my guild and was looking into joining a more progression minded guild. Don't get me wrong, the guild I left had a lot of nice people in it. A few of them had so much potential. It was just time to move on.
So now I've joined this "non-raiding" guild, (I use non-raiding lightly as we currently raid 5 nights a week) and I find myself in an unusual position. I was the second horde warrior on my server to 80, first in the guild, first of the tanks to be uncrittable...I think you get the point. And yet, they insist on taking lesser geared and skilled tanks to their 25 mans on the principle that they are guild veterans. I can understand wanting to give spots to the folks who have been there the longest. But, when one of those tanks admits to having threat gen issues and others are unreliable, I think its time to cut your losses.
We currently have 5-6 tanks. On any given Naxx 25 night they run 3-4 depending on the quarter. This past week I was subbed in for one wing then asked to sit back out. Didn't win anything, and walked away with 3 Emblems. This has put me at a big disadvantage with the other tanks. I'm behind in Emblems and loot drops, yet they don't make any changes despite the claim that they want to gear up everyone evenly. Our GM has stated that he wants me in the raids, but isn't doing anything about it. So I told them that in order to ease the tank situation to just take me off even the standby roster.
Having been a main tank for so long its hard to sit by and watch others gear up and see the content before me. In our 10 mans, the 25 man tanks play second to me. (The 10 man organizer is one of the 25 tanks and will not MT the 10, nor does he know the strats.) The GM pulled all the tanks aside a couple days ago and suggested that we all work on off-spec gear. I told him I would, but, I rolled this to tank. I didn't roll a warrior to dps.
I've been looking around at gear and the information here and I'm trying to put together a dps suit. Its just not what I want to do as a warrior.

My guild isn't into raiding quite yet, although will be soon. I'm kinda wondering if I'm going to be in the same position of having to adjust to a DPS role...like you, I'm not the least bit interested in doing so.Posted 12-20-2008 at 02:40 PM by Bramborough

Swings both ways. Its annoying when those who get there first get the best positions and its annoying when those who are best friends get the best positions but alas, thats life and thats wow for you.
I can honestly say there are MILLIONS of people like you. Looking to get in on the action but not wanting to start from scratch and sometimes finding the best guild is a little luck.Posted 12-20-2008 at 06:08 PM by blahism

Leave them. Right now.
You don't want to be dealing with a garbage attitude like that in Ulduar and there are many opportunities and guilds on any server that will reward performance and skill. If necessary, find a decent 10 guild and help guide their movement to the top. It is never good to stick with a guild that doesn't adhere to common sense.Posted 12-20-2008 at 07:14 PM by Gadholm

Personal philosophy: Healers > Tanks > DPSers. This is strictly based on the fact that 10 classes can dps, 4 can tank, and 4 can heal. In almost every setting healers outnumber tanks in a raid. Your class cannot heal, therefore you should tank.
That aside, you're a tank; a tough guy if you will. Stand up to the guy. You'll get your way or get booted probably. Either way works for you since it's not like you were doing what you wanted to do there if you're dpsing anyway. In the last guild I was in they told me I wasn't going to be tanking and I said "Sweet, I get to play my druid", but if I hadn't leveled my druid already I would have said "no, and here's a list of people who you raid with who say I'm a better tank than the ones you're bringing." I've since left that guild since they instituted a "me and my friends will decide who deserves loot" policy, and my new guild is quite happy with another tank.Posted 12-21-2008 at 12:33 PM by Petninja

The GM and I have talked about it at great length on more than one occasion. He continues to say that he wants me in the raids, but since its not a "hardcore raid guild" he doesn't feel right replacing someone who is struggling with a better tank.
Its just painful to sit here and listen to one of them (another tank) complain about constant latency issues, not knowing how to use vigilance, and threat gen issues. There's another one who a few weeks ago was complaining about not being able to run 5 mans, 'because people prefer the other person (the pre WotLK MT from what I understand), then won't run 5 mans when people are begging for a tank. And from what I see now, the pre WotLK MT won't log on for anything outside of the 25 man raids.

I love tanking, thats what I was recruited to do. It doesn't make any sense to me to not be used for the purpose for which I was recruited.Posted 12-21-2008 at 07:44 PM by Vissara

Basically what you have is a trust issue. Before you got to that guild, other tanks were getting beat up and going through some trying times. There is a lot to be said for trusting the guy up front and a guild thats been together for a while isn't just going to sacrifice that position for someone who got a bunch of firsts. With MT position comes an unspoken 'leadership' role and unless some very unique circumstances come around, you will most likely not step into the MT position with ease.
I guild hopped at the end of TBC and I found that info out quickly. I joined a raiding guild and their tanks were TERRIBLE. When their MTs couldn't make it and I was put in we would clear The Eye in about an hour to an hour and a half. With their tanks it was an excruciating 3 hour affair that would often lead us to just bagging it for the evening. Joining a guild and expecting to become the MT over others just because your stats and game skill is better is a little naive.Posted 12-22-2008 at 11:39 AM by Khue

Part of this guild's application process is to run whatever you can with them. For the first couple weeks after WotLK release I was their only tank at 80. So I had runs coming out of my ears. Running heroics before being uncritable again, its really a test to see how your skills are. And the amount of appreciation and talk of getting me involved had my expectations up.
Its not that I expect to be THE MT after just joining. I just would have expected to be put into the roster over the people who had reliability or threat gen issues.Posted 12-22-2008 at 02:36 PM by Vissara
