We'd been working on an encounter for a couple weeks and seen significant progress with a number of close kills in last night of attempts. Everyone knew that we by all rights should kill the boss tonight and turns out we did.

Unfortunately... we 1 shotted it.

Come again?

Yup. Unfortunately.

As a result, we got derailed and annihilated by everyone being entirely too overconfident. After all we'd just downed a tough boss for us, how could any mere trash mob stand in our way. Well the trash mobs did stand in our way... they really really stood in our way good. On the third group of trash, we lost more people than the entire series of about a dozen pulls that we had done for the first time ever just the other day.

It was embarrassing and it took everything I could to not explode because the fact was they'd earned it. They had 1 shot the boss and they simply were happy.

But don't think I'm rooting for any more first time 1 shot kills. A little death goes a long, long way.

After a new big kill, it can be really important to try to analyze your crew and see what the mood is, and what you'll be capable of. Something I'm not very good at yet, it can be tough depending on how much time is left in your raid night.

Our first Vashj kill was a good example. Something like 75 attempts over two or three weeks, we came in hard that night, everyone was on the ball, and we nailed it in the first hour. Everyone was playing and communicating so well. Then spent two hours trying to kill Magtheridon. We were so excited that cube clicking was completely beyond us.

Haha yeah, I've had that happen to raid groups too. Overconfidence will soon shoot you down.
