I wanna do amazing DPS. I don't know why, I just do. It's not that I'm tired of tanking... I love tanking, but I want to be able to push the lazier dpsers by putting up some incredibly prot dps numbers. (i.e. DPSing while prot spec in fury-ish gear)

Anyway... so here's Step 1: http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f97/4...dps-guide.html
I've mapped it all out.

Step 2 is to actually get all the pieces on the list.
Step 3 is to put it to the test and start kicking ass and taking names.

I'll be sure to report it here when I find out the results of it, but it's pretty exciting to see it all in the works.
Are you an aspiring Prot DPSer too?

I don't know about "amazing" DPS, but I think certainly viable to boost to a point where some of the party will have to work to stay above the tank. I've noticed recently that, while still #4 on the 5-toon list (hopefully healer will always be #5)...I have been a LOT closer to #3 than I ever experienced in BC, usually accounting for 22-24% of total damage done.

And this without *any* conscious effort on my part for damage...I'm sure that with a little gear and spec tweaking, could boost this to where the #3 DPS-er really has to work to stay ahead of me.

I'm currently trying Cider's Impale spec, and overall happy with it. Haven't brought myself to skip Conc Blow and Vigilance yet. The threat levels I'm achieving, however, do indicate that the point in Vigilance is pretty much wasted at this point, as Cider argues. My threat routinely 3-4 times the next highest guy on the list; I think I may put this point to better use elsewhere. My crit % is pretty low, I may put it back into Cruelty, or I may try the Deep Wounds option that some folks have tried and liked.

I've been doing prot DPS in quasy tank gear. capped hit/expertise and a boatload of SBV on STR. I sit in battle stance so I can still tclap and help the tank out by providing a valuable debuff. I still keep up about 1.1k-1.3k dps. On heavy aoe instances like strat i've peaked to 1.6k

I may have misunderstood OP...thought you were talking about damage output *while tanking*. Do you mean acting in a DPS role as Prot Spec with someone else tanking?

This is specifically geared towards DPSing when not tanking during a Raid since fights shift between requiring 4 tanks and requiring 1. (...and b/c I'm trying to not MT everything this time around)

I've been working on it. My problem is I focus a rather too much on my rotation, trying to keep shockwave / conc blow / rend in use in the best spots to maximize sword and board and minimizing clipping potential S&B procs. So I spend too much time trying to squeeze out minimal gains, and spend too much time standing in the fire, which is embarrassing.

There's a big complexity jump in trying to fit in all the extra tools you can use properly in between S&B procs, but it's disappointing that that extra effort doesn't translate into really solid gains.

Prot DPS is just too limited by all the juice it gets out of revenge and Imp.defensive stance, which don't help the DPSing prot warrior at all.

Do you think Rend is worth adding to the Rotation? I'm just not seeing the point.

Don't do it! I specced fury for a raid because we had too many tanks for naxx25. After looking at my numbers, I got permanently switched to dps =(

I have no intention to spec Fury. I'm simply going to try my best to maximize my raid dps while not tanking.

Shadevar, TC can be used in Defensive stance these days.

I think the battle stance point is to reduce your own threat (because he's trying to not tank). If you are pushing huge dps numbers, theres a chance of pulling off the actual tank (thought in that case... you should probably be the MT).
At least in Battle Stance you get more rage/do less threat/and do 10% more dmg (you won't be getting the benefits of enraged unless you're actually taking hits).
Shadevar goes in Battle stance rather than beserker stance for TC.

    Question for this thread:
Do you guys try to DPS with S&B or do you dual-wield? (i S&B but haven't tried measuring dps differences)
