Anyone can be an Average Leader
Posted 09-16-2008 at 12:34 PM by veneretio
An Average leader can run an average raid and average things can happen when everything goes average.
A Good leader can run a good raid and good things can happen when everything goes good.
A Great leader can run a great raid and great things can happen when everything goes great.
But a True Leader can take a terrible situation and endure. An average situation and make it good. An okay situation and make it great. A great opportunity and make it amazing.
If you can't lead when everything isn't going great, you can't truly lead.
A leader is defined not by what he accomplishes when everything goes right, but instead what he accomplishes when everything goes wrong.
That's a leader.

| | Spoken as a true leader. Should be the first page of a Raid Leader manual. |

| | For a dumb, meat head tank like all of us, you're pretty smart Vene.... I emphatically agree (mainly because my own self esteem depends on it). I've been there, leading amazingly mediocre conglomerations of noobs to at times, respectable progression in relative terms, at least. We often lament playing with terrible, selfish players and watching them get kitted out in cutting edge gear but seldom do we recognize outstanding players that are diaminds in the rough. Leadership ties in here in many ways. |

| | Agree with the content. But not the title, I have seen far too many people that can never aspire to being even an average leader. |

| | The best leaders I've found are the ones that can keep things light and fun while still keeping the raid focused and productive. No one expects every raid to go perfectly, but if you can maintain a sense of team and avoid the finger pointing syndrome then those 25 people will keep coming back each raid night. The greatest problem is that True Leaders are few and far between and if a raiding guild only has one of them, burn out is a real danger. PS - If anyone is not reading Vene's blog at www.tankingtips.com you are missing out on some excellent and insightful discussions. |
