Guitar Hero, Zack/Miri, Ironman IMAX, Transformers

Welcome back everyone. I hope your Friday is going as well as mine has been. If not, hopefully this first tidbit of news will bring some sort of cheer to your day.

A little while ago I told you all that Bret Ratner (X-men 3, Rush Hour 1/2/3) had opened his mouth and dared suggest that he would be making a Guitar Hero movie. Well thankfully, as initially indicated by individuals at Activision, that isn't happening.

"I'd really like to do it, but they're (Activision) not letting me... I expressed my interest, but because it's such a success, it's like now there's no reason to make a movie about it.... The game is wish-fulfilling, everyone can be a rock star... I might prevail... I usually do."
That last part bugs me the most. Get over yourself. The most recent pair of movies you made were so terrible that I wanted to never return to the theater again. X-men 3 was so bad that I literally would have extinguished the life of a small, infant animal given the chance. Do us a favor and don't make a movie again.

Speaking of things that won't die, The Dark Knight will be fully re-released into theaters in January of 2009 for a second push just before award season. Not sure what good it'll do, but maybe, just maybe, it'll get pushed over Titanic as a result.

At the beginning of this month I showed off the new trailer and "International" poster for Kevin Smith's flick "Zack and Miri Make a Porno". I make that note of international because the MPAA deemed the poster too explicit for the US. Well Smith's response in the new US poster below, and its amazing.

Reviews on the movie have been spilling in like crazy from test audiences and film festival goers, saying its easily Smith's best flick ever. That doesn't set a particularly high bar for me since I haven't been his biggest fan.

So the fact of "That Terrible Wizard and Magic Movie That I Screen Recently and it Really Did Suck Horribly" being pushed back to July of next year has studios shitty their pants. We've seen a massive jumble of release dates since the announcement because, despite the fact that it'll be horrendous, people are going to flock to it like crazy. The latest movies to be shuffled around are Universal's remake of "Land of the Lost" starring Will Ferrell and the new "Fast and Furious". Will is getting shoved a full month forward to the beginning of June and Diesel is getting bumped up just a week.

George Clooney has "Burn After Reading" coming out this weekend, which I'm definitely going to try and see, but this news tidbit is about his next project on the horizon. I kinda thought that after last year's shunning of Hollywood's middle-east/Iraq/anti-war themed films that they wouldn't dare go there again... but I guess I was wrong. Well, only half wrong.

The project is called "The Men Who Stare at Goats". I'll quote the info available below.

In talks to star with George Clooney are none other than Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges. The film, which is to be directed by Grant Heslov, centers on Bob Wilton (McGregor), a desperate reporter who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady (Clooney), who claims to be a former secret U.S. military psychic soldier who was re¬activated post-9/11 in Iraq. The duo's travels through Iraq offers glimpses into the supposedly real secret Army unit tasked with creating soldiers with paranormal powers.
Sounds pretty insane to me... but eh, we'll see what happens.

Now to the good stuff. I'm tired of linking back to stuff already, but recently I stated my top 5 flicks for the summer. Iron Man came in at a strong #2. In a year with no Dark Knight, Iron Man would have solidly held that #2 for me personally. I can't wait for the second to come out. The website ComingSoon.net has a pretty cool interview with the director, Jon Favreau, so I'll quote it below.

Favreau...
expects to find storylines and themes that will carry through the second film and conclude in a third. He said he doesn't foresee any problems devoting the bulk of his filmmaking efforts to seeing the franchise through to the end.
Who'll be the "big bad"?
Iron Man's classic comic book nemesis the Mandarin, the Asian crimelord who sports ten powerful ring weapons (alluded to in the first film through references to the terrorist cell the Ten Rings) will most likely emerge as a primary antagonist, although Favreau is still wrestling with how to address the villain's mystical origins and fit them into the high-tech world established in the debut film.
We've previously heard some suggestions of the following, but I'm not sure this element had actually been confirmed yet.
The most well-known storylines from the comic book series – "Demon in a Bottle," in which Stark becomes an alcoholic, and Rhodey taking over the role and armor of Iron Man during Stark's recovery – are expected to be included, possibly

Jon also had a few words to say about how he'd like to make the next movie at the Iron Man DVD/Blu-Ray release conference... stating that if he has his way the entire fucking movie will be filmed in IMAX 3D from start to finish... not just some notable scenes of coolness like we saw with The Dark Knight. Eat that Christopher Nolan.

Aaaand while on the topic of IMAX 3D, it certainly did wonders for this actor (I'm being sarcastic but you can't tell)... Ray Winstone (Beowulf, Indiana Jones and the Movie that Shouldn't Have Been Made) just got nabbed to costar alongside Mel Gibson in his new "just back to acting and not directing" movie, "Edge of Darkness". The movie previously had Robert DeNiro in the role, but for currently unknown reasons he's had to quit the production.

Amidst some rampant rumors and "leaked" concept artwork, it seems that Transformers 2 will in fact feature Devastator.

Here's the info available thus far.

- Seven construction vehicles merge to form Devastator
- Devastator has lots of upper body strength, like a gorilla
- Not just green, some of the vehicles are red and yellow
Wrapping up for the day we've got the latest in the movie that's never probably going to get made, Wonder Woman. The farther production ever seemed to get along was when it was in the hands of the illustrious Joss Whedon, but since being plucked from his direction its done nothing.

Apparently it has resettled with producer Leonard Goldberg (Charlie's Angels)... who talks a bit about his vision and past rumors that the Wachowski siblings were working on it.

“At one time, Joel [Silver] said they might have an idea. But they got diverted to another project [and] never followed through... There may come a time when they will be focused on ‘Wonder Woman’ and may come up with whatever their take on it was. They’re certainly very talented guys. Their vision for movies — whether they’re successful or not — is always singular.”

But what he does know is that he wants the story to be modern:

“I hope that we don’t finally wind up doing the same story again: Steve Trevor flying, and his plane crashes onto the island [of Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s matriarchal homeland]. He’s supposed to be executed, and she saves his life. Perhaps we’ll do that in a very abbreviated fashion up front, and then come up with a story that no one has seen yet.”
Have a great weekend. :D
