Tanking weapons... are they really worth it?

Posted 03-22-2008 at 01:27 PM by Trainwrex
So recently i have gotten a ton of new gear that has pushed my defense rating over to 504 with my tanking weapon, which in this case is The Sun Eater.

in a recent kara run, i obtained a Spiteblade which, unless i really need the added dodge, i use as my tanking weapon now.

So this brings me to my blog purpose.

Are tanking weapons, if not needed to make your stats, really worth it? So they swing faster..that doesnt really increase my rage generation. They hit weaker, well that affects my threat generation.

I have noticed my tps has increased greatly as well as my overall dps with my spiteblade. i lose less aggro to my healers with a single sunder and i am able to hold more mobs easier. On boss fights, i tend to use my Sun eater if i'm getting eaten up, but only then.

I dont have the KD yet, however, i really dont see it being more effective than a dps sword.

So unless its an epic boss fight, such as TK and SSC content, i really dont see a use for a tanking weapon or my 500 defense rating with it.

Faster weapons are so when you get a ton of rage you can dump it into heroic strike devastates and attacks, which will definately improve your threat and dps. Low rage situations a slower harder hitting weapon might work better, never tried it. I am trying to find/make weapons that have more hit rating/expertise/dps and still stay at 1.6 speed so that I can get the best of both worlds

Tattman2an: Make them. Blazeguard/Blazefury, the swordsmithing one-hander, is a decent fast dps weapon, and suits the tanking role pretty well.

... or wait for the [item]Quickening Blade of the Prince[/item] from Magister's Terrace heroic.

To the topic: I prefer fast weapons for a lower relative HS cost, and for the steadier rage inflow when I've just avoided a couple of hits.
In low-rage environments, where slow weapons would start to shine, I equip my SBV/expertise set instead, which incidentally has less avoidance... and thus more rage to use on more powerful threat moves.
At the end of the day, I guess it's down to personal preference, and to how much gear diversity you have. Two bags stuffed full of equipment are getting me pretty far in all possible situations!

I use fast tank weps when i know ill be taking ample dmg to fuel my full threat rotation and heroic strikes. In low rage situations, such as normal 5mans, some heroics, early Karazhan, I use a slow 1h'er since I'll be using few heroic strikes if any. This makes for slightly better devastates, and given that my slow wep is a Talon of Azshara, it makes for a good low rage threat weapon.

It is more realistic that without the avoidance, you are taking more hits and therefore have more rage to play with. Despite what you might have witnessed, perhaps your rotation does suit a slower weapon better, the actual weapon dps is a very meager portion of a warriors tps.

For the most part our attacks give high base threat values augmented by talents and defensive stance. I have, for instance, tanked on a dare, Zul'jinn with an the grey eroded handaxe I got from trash in the same ZA. Short version

"Lol, isn't that the axe I want out of here?"
"yeah, why don't you tank Zul'Jinn with it?"

In all honestly, the extra damage I took from not having any mitigation on it probably is what supplied me with the rage to tank him without anyone dying.

In general the best threat weapons for tanking are high speed with hit or expertise. Its unfortunate that the high speed arena welfare items are all offhand, or you'd see a lot of tanks with those.

Depends on content you're doing. Firstly 490 def is not a hard cap, the more defense you have, the less damage you will take. If you're doing new raid bosses, more defense is not a bad thing, unless you're woefully low on health, in which case get more stam, and use a tanking weapon since they tend to have more hp than dps weapons. Generally speaking, when learning new bosses you will want to use gear with as much 'tanking' stats as possible, unless you're talking about gimmicky fights like ROS in which case switch to a threat set.

If you're talking about heroics, and you outgear the instance, then by all means switch in gear that will provide more threat/rage if you're having issues holding aggro.

BTW I usually tank BT/Hy with around 540ish def on hard hitting bosses, so high def is not a bad thing.

Coming from a prot pally where your weapons are only aggro weapons (no mitigation/avoidance choices for pallies), I tend to favour aggro weapons on my warrior. I carry around Sun-Eater and KD, but I rarely use them, swapping them in mid-fight is a rare thing.

In theory, fast weapons allow more threat generation in a boss fight where you have so much rage from incoming damage that you are able to get off a Heroic Strike in nearly every swing. I say in theory because that's only likely to happen in boss fights.

In practice, fast weapons are preferred in most situations because they generate threat and rage more consistently from white swings. So if you miss, it is easier to recover with a fast weapon. Unless you are chain pulling, in which case you keep rage from one fight to the next, and weapon speed is irrelevant.

In every other respect, high DPS weapons are far, far superior to "tanking" weapons that stack defensive stats. For general tanking get the highest DPS fast weapon that you can get your hands on. If you out-gear the content and chain pull, use your best weapon even if its slow. Your Sun Eater belongs in your bags, to be taken out and used only when fighting the boss.
