One more: Prot DPS > Fury Prot DPS?

So a strange thing happened last week in ZA. I decided to blow some cash re-spec'ing for ZA, as I usually OT it and our prot pld MT's it. So I put 41 points in Fury and 20 points in Prot to maximize my viability, or so the concept went.

Now, my rotations sucked for the first two attempts as I got used to Rampage, and that's part of it. But on our boss fights, my DPS via recap at the end was 350, then 450, then finally when i got windfury only 550. I can do 800 dps devastating! WTF? Same gear. I did notice that Fury seemed to be more speed sensitive, with devastate it doesn't really matter if I have my [item]The Decapitator[/item] main hand or my [item]Mallet of the Tides[/item] main hand - I do about the same; but putting the slower Decap seemed important as Fury.

I think the spec I chose was http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=LZVVzVMxRVuVozEpoh - maybe it has to do with the fact that I ignored the improved DW talent, I don't know - it can't have helped I suppose- but I just didn't expect to have my DPS go down when I put 41 points in Fury.

What gives? Are the 20 in arms that important to the synergies? Is it just a "lol you suck at fury rotations lol" thing?

Like you I (prot) respecced to a similar type of build for a za run a few weeks ago, thought I only enough in prot to get imp shield block and defiance and found a very similar thing. I put it down to a combination of

- inexperience at controlling use of rage in a very different type of rotation
- keeping sunder armour and demo shout up

I havent tried it since then, but am glad I'm not the only prot warrior who battled with a temporary change. I hadnt really though about speeds of weapons having an effect, will have to ponder this.

The stats you want to emphasize in a true fury spec are very different than prot dw dps.....very high crit is necessary to keep flurry up, and rotations can literally change your dps by over 200 easily. Practice makes perfect.

prot dps is amazingly underrated. i think I'll try getting a bear this weekend as a prot dps OT.

Similar thing happened to me (cept I specced full fury) and the guild fury who regularly topped dps lol'ed at me and said I needed more practice. I think I was too careful about whirling near cc, my gear lacked enough crit, I wasn't used to having so little rage, didn't always stand behind stuff and didn't always position correctly for whirling multiple mobs.

I can out-dps a lot of people (especially for short fights) with my dev spam though. :-)

You need DW Spec. You're right about the slow speed being better, it makes your WWs hit harder. Drop Imp Exec and Piercing Howl. Make sure you have 30% crit so you can keep Flurry and Rampage up as much as possible.

Practice will push your fury dps higher. You can't spam and ignore your rotation.

I would probably spec something like this: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=LZVV0VxxRVuqo0Edoh
