PVP with a shield?

(From March 19th)
Not just any shield mind you, but the Merciless Gladiator’s Shield Wall. While wearing 600 SBV and a decent amount of crit. I know what you’re thinking… “Thug forgot to respec” and you’d be right.
But, dear reader, let me tell you how wonderful it is to have an attack that does 1000 damage easily and crits for 2k all while hiding behind a shield and adding a 5% block chance to the combat table. And did I mention that it now has a 100% chance to dispel a helpful buff on it? 2.3 took it from 50% to 100%. Being the pseudo wonk Warrior guy that I am, and having a new appreciation for PVP, I think I’m going to have to see how far I can take this.
Early results in AB were good. Gibbed a Mage or two even, and knocking bubbles off pala is nice. EOTS going well too. Even a little bit of AV felt OK. Last night I was getting back to back 1800 crits on warriors (yay for devastate applying sunders!) followed by a 2350 execute. The warrior died. That felt like Mortal Strike I tell you!
So, what the hell? What are the numbers behind something like this? Let’s look at the damage formula. Shield slam does between 420 and 440 damage (let’s just call it 430 shall we?), plus you add your shield block value (SBV) to that. For tanking you look at its threat value, but that’s not useful in PVP very often (only matters to pets on autopilot) so we’ll ignore it. Also, the Shield Mastery talent 30% more damage to this. So here’s the math: 430 + 570 (my SBV) = 1000 * 1.1 = 1100. If I pop my trinket that’s 430 + 260 + 430 = 1260 * 1.1 = 1,386! That’s a 2.7k crit easy! Heck, that looks like Mortal Strike. With higher shield block values and the impale crit enhancement talent in arms, the protection community has recorded shield slams as high as 11,900. One crit, 12k damage. That’ll one shot just about anything. Of course, 3-5k crits are much more realistic but that’s still huge amounts of damage.
So I think I’m going to try to merge my new love of PVP with my tanking setup to see what I can do. Maybe even Arena?

| | Good luck living the dream... ...unfortunately, that's about all it'll ever be. "P(rot)vP" is alot of fun because it's rare to see a gear'd Prot warrior in BGs/Arena, but the thrill of smashing face with a shield is addictive. Clothies, beware. We WILL destroy your meager armor. We WILL debuff your shields. We WILL bash your spells (and silence you if spec'd right). We WILL reflect those 3-5k spells back at you. Rogues are my favorite to murder tho. A well-gear'd Prot Warrior with 600+ SBV (mine's 697 atm) will demolish a Rogue quickly. Just be sure to hamstring-spam to keep them from running too far. (Improved Revenge is NICE for these fights) |
