"How can you be a protection warrior at level one?" I hear you all asking. It's a matter of heart. Of drive. Of the mentality of a protection warrior.

Leveling from 1-70 while protection specced was a pain, but it allowed me to practice my tanking skills on the way to 70. I tanked everything from VC to Gnomer to BRD, on up through all of the Burning Crusade instances as I leveled through them. And now I find myself the warrior tank in my small guild of friends who is the best geared, and is one of the go-to guys when we do our ZA attempts.

Being prot at heart has its advantages.

Epic'd At 70 = Undergeared at 80

Posted 01-20-2009 at 10:21 AM by Thireas (Protcore!)

I know what you're all thinking. The title is an obvious statement. Of course if you're wearing level 70 gear at level 80, it's going to be underpowered. But that's not really what I'm saying.

What I'm saying is that as you level a character that was fully in epics, tanking end-game instances (or healing or DPSing), you're going to feel some attachment to particular pieces of gear. Your view of any new piece of gear for any given slot is going to be biased, whether it's toward the...

In Case You Hadn't Noticed...

Posted 09-23-2008 at 08:38 AM by Thireas (Protcore!)

The brewfest boss, Coren Direbrew, drops the equivalent of 41 badge trinkets. You might not want to pay 41 badges for [item]Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker 600[/item], but a couple kills for [item]Coren's Lucky Coin[/item] might be worth it. Or better yet, you can get [item]Empty Mug of Direbrew[/item] and save yourself having to buy [item]Bloodlust Brooch[/item].

Healing and spell damage trinkets also exist, if you want those:
[item]Direbrew Hops[/item]
[item]Dark Iron Smoking...

P&P Tanking

Posted 08-04-2008 at 10:54 AM by Thireas (Protcore!)

I am a big fan of pencil and paper roleplaying games. My first one, of course, was Dungeons & Dragons (Third Edition, though I had read the First Edition rules). I played a lot of D&D throughout college, and expanded my horizons to Call of Cthulhu, Shadowrun, World of Darkness, Savage Worlds, and more. It was a good time all around, and I became a good game master as well as a good player. In fact, this is how I met most of my current WoW guildies - through a gaming club at my college....

A Little History

Posted 06-07-2008 at 03:39 PM by Thireas (Protcore!)

For anybody who's interested, this post is the history of why I decided to make a tank, and my experience of tanking up to ZA. Read it if you want. If not, here's the gist: I've been prot since I had talent points, because DPSing is boring. With my small guild (we now have 23 raiding members), I now main-tank Kara and ZA. It's been a journey.

I first started my now-main character when I was unemployed, and doing a lot of 5-mans and UBRS runs with my Warlock pre-TBC. I noticed that a...
