"How can you be a protection warrior at level one?" I hear you all asking. It's a matter of heart. Of drive. Of the mentality of a protection warrior.

Leveling from 1-70 while protection specced was a pain, but it allowed me to practice my tanking skills on the way to 70. I tanked everything from VC to Gnomer to BRD, on up through all of the Burning Crusade instances as I leveled through them. And now I find myself the warrior tank in my small guild of friends who is the best geared, and is one of the go-to guys when we do our ZA attempts.

Being prot at heart has its advantages.

Quick Poll

Posted 08-01-2008 at 10:15 AM by Thireas (Protcore!)

Since I don't think we can really do polls, just reply in the comments.

Do you know the real life names of your guildies, and to what extent?

In my guild, if someone joins, it's expected that they'll put their RL name in their guild note. It's just the way we operate: as a group of friends who happen to play WoW together (and other things - I'm playing D&D 4E with some of them tonight (more on that later)). This isn't to say that I know all of these people in real life,...

The Grind

Posted 07-28-2008 at 12:31 PM by Thireas (Protcore!)

Wired.com posted this article by Clive Thompson. It's about why MMO players, specifically World of Warcraft players, grind levels. It mentions experience in specific, but I think it could be extended to Honor, Arena Points, Reputation, BG Marks, etc.

Thompson's main point is that grinding is a direct time-to-reward relationship: The more time you put in, the more reward you will receive. Fact. He further points out that nothing (or at least, very few things) in real life work(s) that...

Gyth is a Wuss

Posted 07-28-2008 at 06:54 AM by Thireas (Protcore!)

... and so is Rend.

Last night, I did about half of UBRS, trying to help Zigystardust get some more Tier 0 (Dungeon 1) stuff. We had Khia, a 62 Shadow Priest along with us for some DPS (Zigy being specced resto at this point). I was really excited about tanking some dragons, even if they were terribly under level.

I have really fond memories of running UBRS over and over (all PuGs) with my Warlock, to get his [item]Dreadmist Robe[/item]. Gyth seemed really impressive back...

WoW Since Gruul

Posted 07-24-2008 at 08:53 AM by Thireas (Protcore!)

Well, I haven't tanked anything since Gruul. And, you know, that's okay with me for right now. I'm not terribly interested in Kara for the moment, and I think that's what's going down tonight (Thursdays being one of our two guild nights). If there's a ZA run in the works, I'm definitely in, though.

What I have been doing is PvP. On three different toons. This may surprise some people who've known me for a while, as I had absolutely no desire to PvP for the longest time. But for now,...

DPS: Two-hander vs. Dual-wield

Posted 06-09-2008 at 08:14 AM by Thireas (Protcore!)

When off-tanks aren't needed to tank anything, usually on single-mob boss fights, they turn into DPS. We all know this. Assuming said off-tank is a protection warrior, we can assume they have Devastate. Most of the time, they will also have One-Handed Weapon Specialization - increasing the damage done while wielding a one-handed melee weapon by 10%.

Devastate is a pretty awesome DPS ability. Not quite as awesome as Bloodthirst,
but it will do for us prot warrior who are forced...
