"How can you be a protection warrior at level one?" I hear you all asking. It's a matter of heart. Of drive. Of the mentality of a protection warrior.
Leveling from 1-70 while protection specced was a pain, but it allowed me to practice my tanking skills on the way to 70. I tanked everything from VC to Gnomer to BRD, on up through all of the Burning Crusade instances as I leveled through them. And now I find myself the warrior tank in my small guild of friends who is the best geared, and is one of the go-to guys when we do our ZA attempts.
Being prot at heart has its advantages.

Macros!
I. Love. Macros. I do. They're great. Sometimes, when my computer isn't available, my girlfriend will tell me that I can play on her computer. My usual response is "But... my macros!"
This may have something to do with my profession as a programmer. In fact, I'm certain it does. Making little scripts that do cool things is a hobby of mine, and macros fit nicely in to that hobby. Anyway, I'd like to share some of my macros with you. The useful ones, at least. Or, the ones that I find useful.
The Berserker Rage Macro
/cast [stance:3] Berserker Rage; Berserker Stance
/cast Defensive Stance
/cast [target=targettarget] Intervene;
#showtooltip Reins of the Swift Frostsaber
/use [flyable,nomounted] Cenarion War Hippogryph;
/use [noflyable,nomounted] Reins of the Swift Frostsaber;
/dismount [mounted]
#showtooltip Last Stand
/use 13;
/use 14;
/cast Last Stand;
/castsequence [stance:1, nocombat] Charge; [nostance:1, nocombat] Battle Stance; [combat, stance:3] Intercept, Defensive Stance; [combat, nostance:2] Defensive Stance; [combat, nostance:3] Berserker Stance;
/stopmacro [noharm]
/run if (math.random(5)==1) then SendChatMessage("I want you to hit me as hard as you can", "SAY") end
/cast Taunt
#showtooltip Charged Crystal Focus
/use item:22105
/use item:22104
/use item:22103
/use item:32578
/cleartarget
/target Demon
/stopmacro [nodead, harm]
/target Kil'rek
/stopmacro [nodead, harm]
/target Terestian Illhoof
What are some of your favorite macros? Are you as obsessed with them as me? More so? Do you think I'm crazy? Let me know!

The Berserker Rage Macro
/cast [stance:3] Berserker Rage; Berserker Stance
/cast Defensive Stance
This macro is basically for avoiding fear effects like Nightbane's. This macro has probably saved my raid several times. It's especially useful when you have your scrolling combat text set to display stance changes, as you can watch for when Defensive Stance comes back up, and then you know when to stop spamming it. Note that this can be modified for any non-defensive stance ability, like Execute, Hamstring, Intercept, etc.The Intervene Macro
/cast [target=targettarget] Intervene;
I've saved many a healer in my day using this macro. Say that Usher just broke it's shackle - you tab target it, hit this macro, and you save that poor poor priest from a quick death. For additional effectiveness against tauntable mobs (not like the Ushers), you could add a /cast Taunt to the end of it.The Mount Macro
#showtooltip Reins of the Swift Frostsaber
/use [flyable,nomounted] Cenarion War Hippogryph;
/use [noflyable,nomounted] Reins of the Swift Frostsaber;
/dismount [mounted]
Note that you'll have to replace the names of my mounts with the names of yours (you can shift-click the items to insert the names into the macro).The Panic Button
This macro will mount you on your flying mount if you're in a flyable area, and your non-flying mount if you're not. It's best used after you have an epic flyer (such as my Hippogryph), because non-epic flying mounts are slow compared to epic ground mounts.
#showtooltip Last Stand
/use 13;
/use 14;
/cast Last Stand;
This macro has saved me and my raid many many times. It's gotten me a few "I don't know how you survived that..." comments. It serves as a one-stop shop for all your "oh shit" abilities and trinkets (if you have usable trinkets). If you want to go a little further, add a /cast Shield Wall; to the end of it.The Charge/Defensive Macro (Updated)
/castsequence [stance:1, nocombat] Charge; [nostance:1, nocombat] Battle Stance; [combat, stance:3] Intercept, Defensive Stance; [combat, nostance:2] Defensive Stance; [combat, nostance:3] Berserker Stance;
I love this macro. If you're not in combat, it will make sure you're in Battle Stance, and then it will cast charge. If you're in combat, it will make sure you're in Defensive Stance. It's great for charging in to bosses, as all you do is spam the button a few times, and you're magically in Defensive Stance. Sometimes you have to be careful that you're not charging something when you're trying to switch to Battle Stance (oops, I was already in Battle Stance!), but pulling a little early shouldn't be too bad, right?The Fun Taunt Macro
Update: I've recently added a clause or two that will stance dance and intercept if you're in combat. I've used that functionality a couple times already, and it's been awesome! Just make sure your finger doesn't slip on to it mid boss fight.
/stopmacro [noharm]
/run if (math.random(5)==1) then SendChatMessage("I want you to hit me as hard as you can", "SAY") end
/cast Taunt
You all know Fight Club, right? Well, this macro will make you Tyler Durden one out of every five times you taunt. I suppose you could make it say anything you want, but why would you? Warriors like to fight. We like to get hit. Let some people know!Veneretio's Healthstone Macro
#showtooltip Charged Crystal Focus
/use item:22105
/use item:22104
/use item:22103
/use item:32578
I got this from tankingtips.com, and it rocks. It uses the healthstone that will heal you the most first, followed by the second, followed by the third, followed by any Charged Crystal Focuses you have.The Illhoof Targeting Macro
/cleartarget
/target Demon
/stopmacro [nodead, harm]
/target Kil'rek
/stopmacro [nodead, harm]
/target Terestian Illhoof
This is the macro that is recommended by my guild for the Illhoof fight. When you press it, it targets Demon Chains if there is one. If not, it targets Kil'rek. If neither of them are present, it will target Illhoof. Mostly useful for DPSers, but I've been a DPSer a few times for that fight, so it's a good thing to have.So, those are most of my macros. I have separate macros similar to the Berserker Rage macro for Intercept, Execute, and Hamstring. I also have some spam macros for Enchanting and Jewelcrafting. I have a macro to use Revenge or Overpower, depending on what stance I'm in. I have a macro to switch from sword and shield to dual-wielding, which I never use anymore, because I have ClosetGnome. I have a charge/berserker/intercept macro for when I'm DPSing.
What are some of your favorite macros? Are you as obsessed with them as me? More so? Do you think I'm crazy? Let me know!

I too have an "Oh Shit!"-Button. I guess I will try some of your macros like the Berserker Rage one and the Intervene one when I get Intervene.Posted 07-11-2008 at 05:05 PM by Edgar

I believe the Intervene macro is now obsolete. If your current target is hostile, you automatically Intervene to your target's target.
I love the taunt macro. I'd always wondered if you could have randomly triggered actions in macros.Posted 07-11-2008 at 06:54 PM by Orenus

Good to hear about the Intervene change! That makes it even more versatile. It doesn't matter if you're targeting an enemy mob, or an ally, it'll end up being useful. Also, it frees up another macro slot. Not that I need another... right now.Posted 07-13-2008 at 10:40 PM by Thireas

Update: I've changed my Charge/Defensive Stance macro to also include Berserker Stance/Intercept/Defensive Stance as follows:
/castsequence [stance:1, nocombat] Charge; [nostance:1, nocombat] Battle Stance; [combat, stance:3] Intercept, Defensive Stance; [combat, nostance:2] Defensive Stance; [combat, nostance:3] Berserker Stance;
This requires a little bit more finesse, so you don't accidentally switch into Berserker immediately after switching to Defensive, but it's worked for me so far!Posted 07-16-2008 at 12:30 PM by Thireas
