The Power of Appreciation

Recognition. Appreciation. Thanks. Everybody loves it. No matter who you are, or how modest you are, I guarantee that if somebody compliments you, it will make you smile.

I know I do. Every time somebody says "Great tanking, you were awesome" after a run, it makes me feel good. It makes me feel like all the effort I've put into my character was worthwhile. There have been several occasions where I have been complimented on my tanking, by people I know personally and by random people I PuG with. Zigystardust mentioned in his blog that I, along with our guild's top pally tank, have spoiled him in terms of tanks. After my last PuG Heroic Mech run, one of the DPSers complimented my tanking.

I encourage you all to do the same. If you see somebody do something awesome, let them know. After a raid or a 5-man run, just tell your healers and DPS and other tanks that they did a good job. This is especially effective if you whisper them each individually. It will make them feel good about themselves, and if people are feeling good about themselves, then they're having more fun. And if other people are having more fun, chances are that you're having more fun as well.

WoW is a game of community, and the players make that possible.

Oh yeah, I hear it from time to time and my usual response is I'm just tryin to do my best. And it does go a long way when you hear something like that.

People say it alot on my server - the usual shortage of tanks; they try to keep you happy.

It hurts though when you know you've done a mediocre job. It makes you wonder if the other times they told you that it was just pleasantries

Don't let my navel-gazing put you off! Keep it up!

When you're showing appreciation, it's also a good time for constructive criticism. If you noticed something that wasn't quite right, let them know.

But make sure you can come across as pleasant in text. It's tough, but possible.
