"How can you be a protection warrior at level one?" I hear you all asking. It's a matter of heart. Of drive. Of the mentality of a protection warrior.

Leveling from 1-70 while protection specced was a pain, but it allowed me to practice my tanking skills on the way to 70. I tanked everything from VC to Gnomer to BRD, on up through all of the Burning Crusade instances as I leveled through them. And now I find myself the warrior tank in my small guild of friends who is the best geared, and is one of the go-to guys when we do our ZA attempts.

Being prot at heart has its advantages.

I know what you're all thinking. The title is an obvious statement. Of course if you're wearing level 70 gear at level 80, it's going to be underpowered. But that's not really what I'm saying.

What I'm saying is that as you level a character that was fully in epics, tanking end-game instances (or healing or DPSing), you're going to feel some attachment to particular pieces of gear. Your view of any new piece of gear for any given slot is going to be biased, whether it's toward the purples, or toward that cool-looking helm.

So, you're going to hang on to some pieces that could have easily been replaced by level 74 or 75, simply because you're used to them. They're not as good as the new pieces, but you keep them because they seem like it to you.

There are actually quite a few Sunwell pieces that you won't replace till naxx simply because of the abundance of gem slots and beautiful itemization. It was however extremely heart breaking to replace my http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34185 with http://www.wowhead.com/?item=35642

Every piece you have tells a story of where you've been.
Hey: that's my first epic, that ugly crafted helm.
And I got that on the first kill of prince and that I got after 20 grmbling kills on chess.

It really hurt me deleting/selling some of the pieces I had.

    But..............bank/bagspace is limited.

My old t4,5 and 6 gear is long deleted.

Oddly enough the hardest thing to destroy was my gyro destroyer and my goggles.. just took a lot of work to farm those and they were the first pieces that led me on my path to tanking

I like to keep them to wander around Dalaran and use in heroics to mess with pugs.

part of being a good player is recognizing upgrades, even if they are blue or green. If you chose to stick with the old gear for sentimental reasons you probably don't have that min/max Raider mentality - but the game is about having fun so do what works for you

Personally i'd tank in the best gear available to me and just take out the old stuff for boss kill screenshots

I don't deny that you need the most current gear to raid, however, when I hit 80, I found myself wearing 5 or 6 level 70 pieces. I've been slowly replacing them, but there are still two for which I haven't yet gotten an upgrade.

Compare this to my shaman, who was in 5-man blues at the release of WotLK, and is now level 79, wearing all required level 77+ items (except for trinkets... I've had terrible luck with trinkets), and has a couple level 80 items waiting for her to get that last 80%.

Part of this may have to do with how I leveled the characters. My warrior was leveled mainly with questing and grinding. My shaman was leveled almost exclusively through instancing, with the exception of leather farming.

    It's just interesting, is all.

This is funny to me because as I've leveled up through the instancing/questing grind, I had two pieces I popped some blues into (waist and boots) and recently our server had a few fun SWP pugs just to get people in and look around. While MTing the last one we cleared it all finally had some decent players, ohh and I got two upgrades >_> from SWP <_< hahah my waist and boots now have shiny new T6 pieces in their slots!
So funny, but I know the feeling I have a lot of gear I either like the looks of, or I worked my ass off for them and want to keep them around. I never seriously wear any of them but they keep bag slots and I wear them like badges now and then!

My shaman isn't 80 yet but I already know the hardest thing to get rid of will be my wolf shoulders.

Its just a recolored T2 (not that we had shamans when we were running BWL), however it is now and always will be one of my favorite pieces.

Best part is when people were asking me if it was BT gear or what. How quickly we forget. Can't wait till 80 and people are asking me....I'm going to tell them its a secret drop from OS if you leave up all 3 drakes & everyone uses maces...

Looking back during TBC, I pitied my pocket healers I was tanking for.
I flat refused to take off my full T1 set until I was level 70 after working to get it for so long. I must have abused their mana pools so badly.

Come WotLK I was a bit more sympathetic, since I had also played as a healer during TBC raiding at points. But still, getting two shotted by first boss in HoL (sans buff) at level 76 left me and my healer a bit gobsmacked. Still finished it though!
