"How can you be a protection warrior at level one?" I hear you all asking. It's a matter of heart. Of drive. Of the mentality of a protection warrior.
Leveling from 1-70 while protection specced was a pain, but it allowed me to practice my tanking skills on the way to 70. I tanked everything from VC to Gnomer to BRD, on up through all of the Burning Crusade instances as I leveled through them. And now I find myself the warrior tank in my small guild of friends who is the best geared, and is one of the go-to guys when we do our ZA attempts.
Being prot at heart has its advantages.

I was running around Hellfire with my shaman, doing some quests. I got to the one with the Marauding Earth Rumbler worm-lookin' things, and got an whisper from a druid who was on the quest as well. We grouped up to kill some worms, and ripped through it right good.

Me: Ever since I started the game :-)
Druid: Does 'tarlimance' still play?
Me: Yeah. How do you know him?
Druid: He helped me out aaaaaaages ago.
Druid: Like three years or more.
Me: Wow
Druid: It's not often people help you out
Me: Yeah, we have a lot of good people
Druid: I'll have to say goodbye to tarlimance. I'm quitting in Jan. He probably won't remember me.Anyway, that was a pretty awesome little encounter. See what a little bit of kindness can get you?
Me: I'll tell him you said hi

I love little tidbits like that. It happens to me all the time, too, where I'll end up in a random group, or whatnot, and the following convo will be something like...
Me: "Don't I know you from somewhere?"
Them: "I think so..."
Me: "Maybe we grouped up for something...?"
Them: "Oh, yeah, you helped me and that other guy with that collosus quest in hellfire that one time."
Me: "Oh yeah, tha'ts right! Oh, and check that out! You just joined my guild! Well, whadaya know about that?!"
