Quick Poll

Since I don't think we can really do polls, just reply in the comments.

Do you know the real life names of your guildies, and to what extent?

In my guild, if someone joins, it's expected that they'll put their RL name in their guild note. It's just the way we operate: as a group of friends who happen to play WoW together (and other things - I'm playing D&D 4E with some of them tonight (more on that later)). This isn't to say that I know all of these people in real life, but I do consider most of them friends these days (except for the few who have just joined recently. I haven't gotten to know them yet, but they seem like awesome people).

Sometimes, this is strange if there's a PuGger in a mostly guild group, as we have to use character names instead of real names. Saying "Hey Jexter, can I get PW:F?" instead of "Hey Frank, can I get PW:F?" is not my reflex, especially if I know the player in real life.

What's your situation?

My guild knows my RL name, but everyone still calls me tatt...think it's just whatever everyone is comfortable with.

Ya I know a good portion of the RL names of folks, but ultimately we end up calling people by their game names. Even people that I've known before the game eventually end up getting called by their WoW name. This is more for the sake of the rest of the group's understanding than anything else though. (as well as just in case anyone I might know is not comfortable with people knowing their RL name.. some aren't)

We have some people that use guild names, and some that use real names. I've always tried to use peoples real names, but we've usually had a bunch of people with the same first name which can get confusing, so I tend to mix it up. And it certainly does make it tougher on new people, or joint events with other guilds when we reflectively use real names.

I do feel a bit odd switching gears to using in game names when I hop on Venny's vent.

The vast majority of my guildies are known and called by their RL names, there's the odd exception who prefers to be known by some variation of their main, or ex-main, or main-when-we-first-met-them (you get the picture).

My guild still only has about 13 people in it, several of which are alts. I know the RL names of the people because they are the people I've lived with for the past 3 years. We alternate between RL names and Character names pretty much randomly.

Depends on the person. My GM is extremely open I know more about her than some people in RL, funny thing is i'm exactly the opposite. My real identity is very guarded and people don't know anything about me other than my character.

I know the names of the other few late-nighters on vent, but other than that, no. Somehow WoW is always more fun after midnight.

My pally's guild, we know each other by their real names for the most part. It's really homely to hop on vent and call people by name.

I, of course, am "bear" because we have another guy with my same name in the guild, and we do this to avoid confusion, lol.

Yes, I know alot of my good Wow friend's real names(though I am currently unguilded) We are all veteran players and have pretty well established character names....we'd probably call each other by them if we met in real life. Two of my friends actually got together and are a couple IRL and they call each other by their character names sometimes.

Besides, 3 of the guys in our little group all have the same first name so it would get confusing.

3 of the guys in your group, too?

that's bizzare, in every guild I've ever been in there's three guys with the same RL name... always. O_o

Muggs was first coined by my grandfather with my grandmother giving him a fit over "He'll never be able to get away from that name if you start calling him it now!"

Boy, grandma was right.

That was offtopic, but everyone calls me Muggs or some variaition of Muggs (Muggsy, Muggers, Muggsie, etc..) heck, most of the guild still doesn't know my name after a year.

I'd say I know most of my guild's RL names, even last names, and a lot of cell phone numbers too surprisingly. But any time we ever met up, we've always gone by player names. It's funny calling my friend Derick, Sonya.

The core of raiders in my guild are RL friends. But we still use toon names. What is really confusing is if I'm on my hunter and there's a pugger and my guildies call me by my warrior's name.

Interesting question...

I would have to say that RL names are known in our guild sometimes...but there is nothing systematic about it. Some players (my wife, for example) are far more attentive than I am. She picks up on subtle references and remembers the names...whereas I am oblivious. She knows that "Thor" is really "Brian"...but to me, he is just "Thor." Likewise, I am certain that he looks (in RL) just like the dwarf toon he plays.

I guess a more interesting question to me is whether...if I really like a toon in the game, I would equally be drawn to the player in RL. I find that I genuinely like playing (with all the bantering and interaction) with certain players. What I don't know is how much of that is my toon playing with other toons and how much is me playing with other players.

Very good point. For those people in my guild who I've never seen in real life, I tend to have an image of them that is somehow associated with how they act in guild chat and how they play their character. I'm assuming that those images are very different from what they look like and act like in real life.
