The best thing I ever did to improve my tanking:

Bound the scroll wheel on the mouse (aka middle button) to move backwards. Not being a awsd keyboard turner, I used to struggle moving backwards. It was always awkward to find the down arrow since my left hand rarely leaves the left edge of the keyboard (especially with my G15). One day I did it and within a day I found it natural and second nature. I can easily spam my attacks/shield block while taking the mob/boss on a merry journey, all the while moving backwards.
So if you're a mouse user and find moving backwards awkward, perhaps you can give this a try.

| | Tanking while moving a mob backwards can be done just as effective and you'll move "backwards" faster if you use strafe. You move away from the mob at full run speed, but are still able to hit it. |

| | *shrug* To the man with a hammer everything looks like a nail. I strafe when appropriate, but positioning mobs/bosses is generally not a race and having fine control over backwards movement with the mouse is something I have really come to appreciate. |

| | Fathom lord karathras requires this move, and you are often trying to move the bosses out of aoe areas (Fire/consecrate/volcanos etc) The difference between strafe and backing up speed really makes a difference. An as ven points out you can still shield block/parry/dodge while strafing. |
