Threat Set
Posted 04-21-2008 at 10:24 AM by Rayne
Recently I found religion and really started creating a set for 5-mans and raid trash. A long time ago I read about threat sets and it was suggested that SBV was an excellent stat to stack for threat. So I had outfitter max a set for Block rating (often pieces with one have both), made a few tweaks to it to increase SBV and remain uncrittable, stepped back, decided no way in hell I was tanking an instance in that gear, and basically left it alone (I do use it in H.MgT for the fishes, and it's great for grinding in Nagrand, but dungeons? nah). So I tanked everything in the same gear that I tanked raid bosses.
Well, that's all changed. After 2.4 came out I discovered I could achieve an obnoxious amount of Expertise (48 at the moment, could go higher), and once I noticed that Dodge/Parry reduction was 12% decided to tank 5-mans and raid trash in that set. And it worked well. Didn't really notice any survivability flaws, and had an easier time holding aggro. Decided to take it further and work on +Hit. Have it up to 107 now, and finally got a chance to try it out on a raid. The WWS logs on the trash reported a wonderful thing: 0 dodges, 0 parries, 0 misses (a few glances). Still can reach almost 20k hps in that set. Now it's time to stack SBV, where possible. Aside from better gear it could still use work. Once I can upgrade the T4 helm I will resocket it with the new meta gem and put the +Hit glyph on it. And I may go back and pick up the GAB (new Warrior, hit 70 around Christmas, better badge options available). I cannot report that my character is now perfection and never loses aggro (DPS crits still happen), but definitely having an easy time of things.

| | 12% expertise is probably overkill on trash. I noticed a few dodges last night at 5.5% though. I think you need 95 hit rating, and something like 6% expertise for L72 trash mobs. |

| | Aye, it is, but what to dump? Shard has that nice proc, so it stays. Brooch has +hit too, it stays. Mallet is my best weapon, bracers are my tanking bracers too, girdle has +hit, only item I could see swapping out is perhaps the legs. Could go back to Unwavering and gain a huge chunk of SBV. Have to see if I maintain uncrittability though. |

| | You can get away with a little less defense on L72 mobs as well, although I'm not sure what the magic number is. I've been dumping the shard on trash. It seems weird, since it's so awesome, but the expertise is just a waste. I've been using autoblocker and the solarian battle shout trinket lately. Even using a melee crit trinket would probably work better for you. |

| | I think magic number is 485 not 490 |

| | for me, when I'm tanking trash I swap in Vindicator's pieces. High armor, high stamina, high AP high crit. I drop to just at uncrittable, which with all that resilience is quite low - and I get to equip quite a few honest to god DPS pieces. I keep the shard on too; and I find it and the neck are all the exp I need on trash. Go go Vindicator's! Exp and hit are fantastic threat tools on bosses. You need so much less of it on trash that it creates a lot of room to equip AP, crit and BV items. |
