Casual and Friendly
It was about a year ago that I transferred from my first server to the one I'm on now to play with friends I knew in my town. I left a number of friends on that server, and often miss running with them. I wouldn't consider moving back to their server. My new server is a much nicer one. I've been lucky enough in the past to have seen them in BGs and run with them there. I'd like to do a 10 man with them sometime though. I think it would be a lot of fun. Blizzard could help.
It's easy enough as it is to hop on vent and ask a buddy what BG number he's in and just go there (assuming the same Battlegroup, which I've never left). There's usually no harm done in it and you get to play with your friends, even if you just made them by chance in a BG 10 minutes ago. I'd like to be able to do that with raids. It doesn't seem that difficult or game breaking to put in an option to assign yourself to a raid ID. For example, my friends have a raid going on my old server, know their raid ID and I want to heal for them. It shouldn't be a big deal to put me in their raid when I walk in. They know I'm coming so they bring 9 guys and I just fill the last slot. As I understand it the raids are all saved on a separate server from realms anyway. This would do a lot for guild recruitment as well. Guilds could do trial runs with people who aren't even on their server yet, and accept them if they perform well. I don't think this would stop players from transferring to their new guilds server, because if nothing else it would be a pain to never see your guildies outside of scheduled raids or to never be able to take the summons from a summon stone. I don't think it would decrease transfer traffic any and I could do a couple raids with people I've known in the past. I think it would make things more casual and friendly.
Edit: according to MMO Champ it appears they might actually be implementing something like this in 3.3. This makes me really happy. I can't wait to see some of my old guildies from years ago in an instance ^_^.
