A Raid Leader's Purpose

A raid leader's purpose is to guide...to direct. A raid leader's purpose is not to hold the hands of 24 other people by telling them exactly where to stand and what buttons to press at all times. My job as a raid leader is to give my team (my friends) the tools they need to succeed.

It is impossible as a raid leader to micromanage every aspect of a raid and doing so will result in failure, burnout, or both. It is equally impossible to know every nuance of every class' role in every encounter. The simple fact of the matter is that (sadly) you as a raid leader cannot and will never know everything. Each person within your raid (should) know their abilities and capabilities better than you do. And if they do not, there is a problem.

The key to effectively leading raids and learning encounters is (in my opinion) giving your raid members the information that they need to figure out the rest on their own in a timely fashion.

The first and most major step in accomplishing this is to surround yourself with competent players who are capable of thinking critically on the fly. The second is to make sure that you, as a raid leader, are capable of equipping your raid with the tools they need to succeed.

great post.

The question to be asking yourself as a raid leader is "Am I guiding/directing this player? Or am I having to teach them how to play?"
If the answer is the latter than you are rapidly going to drive yourself as a leader to extinction.

There is always an awareness of that line between management and micro-management that defines how deep your obligations as a raid leader go.
I've seen plenty of raid leaders get burnt out because they lost sight of it and pushed themselves too far to the detriment of not just their will to play, but the receptiveness of their raiders.

wanted to highlight my favorite part of your post:

Part of equipping your players with the tools they need to succeed may be connecting them to the people who can help them improve their personal performance and who can guide them to learn the things they need to know on their own.
But don't fall into the trap of thinking that person must be you. No player, no matter how knowledgable, can 25-box a raid group. You rely on each other. And thus the others must be reliable.
