On the merits of ganking...

What exactly is it that appeals so much about ganking?
I don't get it. Never have. I've heard the whole "Well, I got ganked, so now I'm taking it out on others" spiel -- but that's bullshit, quite frankly. Those 'others' never did anything to you, so why exactly are you attacking them?
Now, it's not that much of a problem. One can easily level on a PvP server and avoid ganking; there are plenty of ways. Quest/grind during late night hours (and US people can find a server which is out of sync with their own timezone to make this easier). You can visit less-popular zones, ala Desolace. You can avoid the gankfest that is STV. You can suck it up (which I usually do). Of course, one can also simply avoid PvP servers altogether.
But that's merely treating the symptoms, not the disease, so to speak.
What makes it so fun to kill people who basically can't defend themselves? I just don't get it.
Fair world PvP -- where any fight where both players can see the level of the opponent is considered "fair" -- is fun, good, and enjoyable. There's constantly a "risk" involved in questing/grinding, which adds a certain thrill. This is essentially what it's like at level 70. But when you're levelling and getting constantly ganked by ?? toons -- you just don't stand a chance.
Maybe I'm just not made for PvP servers...

| | I don't gank personally, but if one of my friends is getting ganked or killed while they're leveling up... i might go defend him. I've never liked ganking, don't find it as fun as a fair duel anywhere or a group fight (5v5 world pvp pwns), but i guess it's part of the ritual of PvP servers, you get a first sight of what pvp is, and you train to get better at pvp. Most of my "ohshitgankers" fleeing techniques come from STV gankage xD |

| | It's a power trip. I'm no psychologist, but I imagine it gives them a rush to be able to kill a player so easily. I've also seen people speculate that it's because they can't win in BGs, but this may not always be the case. I've considered taking my rogue out to Southshore on occasion to relieve frustrations or boredom but stopped myself because I've realised that it wouldn't do anything other than annoy people. A fair fight is much more fun IMO. However, wall jumping onto the inn and shooting people once with my bow like I did at a lower level was a lot of fun XD. Watching them run around wondering where it came from was quite funny. RIP wall jumping ![]() |

| | I TOTALLY feel you Norrath. It is this very thing that caused me to transfer the warrior I leveled on Auchindoun-PvP server, off of it. I did it primarily on principle (with a bit of anger-motivation too). I had had enough the day that I was helping three friends (in their mid-60's) with the Ring of Blood quests in Northern Nagrand and we were repeatedly killed by hordies in full Black Temple gear (they were from a notorious Horde bully-guild that, at that time, was the only guild on server to have completed BT). I posted a very intellectual and reflective post on the realm forums directed at the main instigator and I got a flooded response from their guild calling me a "Carebear" or "Don't role on a PvP server if you don't want ot PvP." I didn't even respond. I went straight to transfer. My main problem is the fact that this kind of thing requires your time. I don't want to donate my game-time to appease the ego-lust of some immature 16 year old. Not going to do it. I love PvP and its something I want to spend more time doing. But, I agree with you...this can be rediculous at times and makes me question whether I am a PvP-server person. |

| | Recently transferred to pve server. It is heaven. You can summon to instances, you always have the zone buff (70% Alliance pop), and your time is your own - It won't be stolen by some jerk killing the prot warrior for fun. Just in terms of efficiency - there is no reason to be on a pvp server unless you like the world pvp that may or may not accompany the endless ganking. |
