Matter Over Mind

Wrath is on the cusp of release, and the majority of WoW's players are sitting around a table, discussing how crappy their gear is going to be come the expansion. Greens better than purples, blah blah. I'm in the beta, and I can prove them wrong, but that's a discussion for another day.

The strange thing is, I'm gearing up for Kara.

"Why?" they might ask. "There are only 7 weeks left, and you can't even play on weekdays!"

Because I want to experience something cool.

I started WoW at this time last year; I only saw Kara three times on my mage, totaling one full run through the instance, minus Netherspite. First run, we couldn't down Netherspite. Second run, I came in at Nightbane, then we proceeded to own the Chess Event and then downed Prince. Third time? Yup...a third Nightbane kill. I've seen more of the "hardest" boss in Kara than any of the others.

Oh, wait. I've seen more of High King Maulgar, Gruul, Void Reaver, Al'ar, Lurker, and Fathom-Lord than any boss in Karazhan.

That's why I'm gearing my soon-to-be second 70 to tank Karazhan. Tempest Keep and SSC got stale surprisingly quickly (shocking, since I never thought I'd even step foot in SSC), but every time I stepped foot in Kara, something swept over me akin to...akin to those first steps into the Wailing Caverns, or Shadowfang Keep. That's right. In terms of overall quality, epicness, and initial wow-factor, Karazhan won me over much like two of the best instances in the game, which also happen to be low-level. So, Karazhan is low-end-game. And? Doesn't mean it ain't epic.

I still have yet to see a room in the game that I think is cooler than the Guardian's Library. I still have yet to hear voice-overs from a boss cooler than the Curator's. I still have yet to see dungeon design that rivals the twisting, changing, ever-dynamic halls of the Wizard's Tower.

Blizzard makes great stuff. And sometimes, one out of that "stuff" turns out to be a gem. Who knows? Maybe I'll like the Black Temple even more. But that's a judgement I'll have to reserve until 80. For now? The full Karazhan level 70 10-man experience awaits.

See you on the other side.

I agree that Karazhan is an inspiring instance that lasts long after you outgear it, while SSC and TK are just places that you clear and move on. Karazhan did remind me of SFK and BFD, two low level instances that I find especially pretty.

If you can, hitch a ride on cleared, or nearly cleared, BT and Hyjal instances. I never raided there but they are worth seeing. Hyjal is a very pretty design. BT is atmospheric and reminds you of UBRS in places, as well as having a particularly charming view from the terrace.
