Week 1 of Ulduar

I haven't written a blog in a while, but I figure it's always a good past time on dead server Tuesdays.

So, my guild has taken advantage of free transfers off of Antonidas (such a bad server) and has landed on Garrosh, a nice little EST server that is home to such favorites as Ciderhelem, manbearpig, tony, and dygrav. It's really nice being on an EST server that isn't massively overpopulated - AH prices are down, Dalaran doesn't crash our computers, mining nodes are everywhere, and best of all, haven't had a healer DC since we moved here!

Since my 25 man team is still forming up, we've started working on 10 man progression in Ulduar, and for not having experienced the fights before we managed to down three bosses (Flame Levi., XT-002, and Iron Council). These have been really fun and exciting fights with some pretty epic kills.

Flame Levi. was a push over, we pretty much zerged him down without an overload stun. I thinking about leaving a tower up and trying it out tonight, but I'm almost certain we will need to stun him and do a pyrite burn on him should we leave a tower up.

XT-002 took a little work, but we managed to pull off a 1 Tank, 2 Healer, 7 dps team kill. It was pretty insane burn, getting him to 75% before the first tantrum, and when his heart closed up he was at 55% and we burned him again - didn't get the first tantrum till 35% which we used a bubble/divine sac to mitigate, second tantrum we did a double tranquillty to counter, and the third I almost died a little inside when I saw 3 of my dps drop to 5% health on the last tick. Doing this, we didn't kill any pummlers and I was tanking the Xt-002 and 6 pummlers as he hit the ground... all I can say is a LOVE 5/5 Demo Shout and Imp TC... so much damage avoided because of that.

We spent some time working on Ignis (75% while bugged) and Kologarn (15% till eyebeam nuked my holy pally) but we settled on the Iron Council after Kologarn bugged out and refused to respawn. I *loved* the council fight, it made me happy to be a warrior again. I was managing my stuns and interrupts to keep the storm caller locked down charging/intervening to get out of the overloads and having a blast. Took us ~6 pulls to finally master and down them with about 20 seconds left on the enrage timer.

We walked away with 3 caster weapons, a few trinkets, and a big smile on our face... getting a progression kill on the last pull of the night makes you feel like a winner, and after a few nights of wiping, we needed that. Hopefully I'll update on this progression again later this week (and get my damn website up!) with some deaths of some more baddies!

Wrath Blog -- finally!

So yeah, I finally decided to sit down and do a blog again; I haven't really had the time to sit down and write one since I came back from college -- go go me with my Master's and no job, but yet I have no time!

So, the last blog I wrote was trying to figure out what toon to level first in Wrath, be it pally, warrior, mage, priest, or DK. I think most of you know, but I went with my warrior, and I haven't been happier. Tanking is much more dynamic and I've actually started using hotkeys; I'm starting to become less of a clicker, haha.

I haven't totally blown off my other characters, the Paladin is being leveled on downtime and is curently 76; trying to get him to 80 and get him honor capped, get some saronite res plate made, and get him the titansteel destroyer before s5 starts. It's not too big of a push, still on rest exp and I make sure to log him out in an Inn every night. It is also helpful I'm doing the same quest chains I did on my warrior so I know exactly where to go to get them done.

My mage... is being abused, about halfway to level 71, and that is notable because you can teleport to dalaran at that level. Any good bank character is going to be in the center of activity! so I'm on a slow but steady mission to get her to 71 to just move up to dalaran.

Death knight... I rolled one, but I *hate* redoing BC content *again* and I'm really taking my time there.

That's my character update, I'll post some more stuff about the raiding later ^.^

The leveling delimma.

With Wrath right around the corner, the question comes: am I happy with the role I choose, the class I played in BC, and what could I do different in Wrath?

As a quick recap I have leveled:
Protection Paladin in ~t6ish start gear (Muggs himself)
Frost Mage in ~t4/badge gear
Fury Warrior in blues/heroic gear
Horde Disc Priest in S2
and I have visions of a Deathknight.

My Paladin and my Mage both have their epic flyers and netherdrakes an my Paladin has been my main since the start of the game for me. My Pally is a BS/Engy and my miner, so obviously she's getting leveled if for no other reason then to feed the industrial production machine that is my paladin. I doubt she'll get any raid time till we have 10 man Naxx on farm, and I'm cool with that, guys have tank alts they'll want to run, and we'll prolly have a "farm night" and a "progression night" set up like we did with 25 mans, only with more flexibility and more chances to go in there and work cause of schedules.

So, this leaves me my fury warrior, my priest, and my potential dk to use. I find myself in a hard spot, I try to compare my warrior to my paladin or my mage gear/tank/damage wise and it's a bit unfair I think. If I had used >1000 badges and full epic gems/za drops on the warrior he would be a BEAST, omg, I can only imagine how unstoppable he would be, like wise if he was in fury gear comparable to my pallies ret gear. What I'm getting at here, is that I've seen the potential of a warrior and I'm a little sad that he's not at the same level as my paladin... but it almost killed me getting my paladin to that point, doing another character would bury me.

The priest... omg, don't get me started, I wish he was alliance, I could actually DO STUFF ON HIM, people need healers all the time over here for Kara and what not, I could have healed the second team for us that is always short healing power... but no.. he's horde and I can't get anything done on him. Tatt, I love you dearly man but I'm icing/ignoring him till I get raiding rolling alliance side prolly man :P

So yeah, it boils down to: do I want to pally tank again or should I take the warrior out and give him a whirl, I'm waffling.. or perhaps I'll just keep the fury warrior fury and tear things apart... it would feel weird not playing on muggs, but I've always felt that a warrior suits me better as I have a real life rage bar ^.^

Potential Frost Mage and Deathknight Synergy

Ok, so, this is what I initially wanted to talk about in my first blog today, but I felt it deserved it's own blog and that way I can continue my series with other classes.

The big point of this: *Frost Mage + Death Knight = Frost Mage Viability via Synergy*

Ok, let's look at the big ones, first of all, they share a similar talent: Frostbite - Frost spells have a 15% chance to freeze the target. Both classes are adept at CC, movement impairing, and rooting (woot).

Well, how do mages fit in there? Let's look at old school skills first:

Ice Shards - Crits deal double damage, nuff said.

Shatter - Increases critical strike chance against *frozen* targets by 50% (talent). before death knights, the only class that could freeze a target was a frost mage.

Ice Lance - Deals triple damage to *frozen* targets. Rank 3 (lvl 78) is 221-255 damage or 663-766 to a frozen target. Not bad, I crit for 2.2k now, this should up it a lot in Wrath.

Winter's Chill - Increases frost crit strike chance by 2%, stacks 5 times for +10% crit total.

Now, how would these old school talents work with a death knight... humm

Frost Strike - 10% chance to freeze a target, not bad, if this proc as you get an frost bolt off, it's big damage from shatter/shards combo.

Frozen Rune Weapon - Applies a debuff increasing frost damage by 1%, stacks 5x. not bad, +5% damage to everything that will most likely stack with curse of the elements.

Chains of Ice - Freezes target in place at range for 3 seconds. A good arena team will coordinate a chaining and a frost bolt/ice lance combo, this will be deadly in the hands of a good arena team

Hungering Cold (51 pt talent)- Leeches heat from the ground and freezes everything in place. Tab-Ice Lance ftw? I think so.

These combos look pretty cool. AoE/Ranged freeze + Ice lance/Frost bolts. Mages boosting DK crit while DK boosts raw damage. It looks like a great synergy... not to mention the amount of freezing will mean lots of lucky shatter procs for big crits for the mages off both character attacks. Now, one point I haven't touched on: *Raid bosses can't be rooted.* /facepalm right? Wrong because of this:

Winter's Grasp: Target is *considered frozen*. Now, I don't know what this means, but it potentially means that raid bosses will have a chance to be susceptible to shatter procs from ice mages. Only time will tell on this.

Since we're talking about Wrath end game, Hunger Cold + the new Deep Freeze (AoE stun on frozen targets) that is the frost mage 51 talent.. /evil laughter Let's hope the enemy in 5's stands close together... ;)

Things that excite me about Wrath P1 (spoilers!)

Note: I'm talking about talents here, so few things.
1. They aren't finalized, this is from the stuff the alpha NDA was lifted on, found on mmo-champions and alpha wikis.
2. Because of the source, they are potentially wrong, but meh, I like to think about things.
3. If you want wrath talents to be a surprise, don't read :P

I'm going to start off my series of blogs with some classes near and dear to my heart/dark side - Mages, Warriors, and Death Knights, sadly Paladins aren't in the works yet, so I can't comment on them, but I can assure you I will give a talent by talent breakdown when they do come out. As for general things, looks like they are going with "rating" now, with talents such as "Increases parry RATING by 20% of your strength" or "Increases critical strike RATING by 15% of your spirit" they are removing the direct modifiers and making classes favor stacking stats and ultimately, Blessings of King will be uber-awesome for every class no matter what now.

I'm going to start with Mages, since, for those of you that don't know, I have a lvl 70 T4ish geared Frost Mage. Some of the things that stood out to me

- Shatter Shield: when the shield breaks freezes all enemies around you. This seems pure pvp, nice way to say "Oh, bye thar" to the rogues that jump you, and if you are a quick tabber, the shatter/ice lance combo on multiple enemies can net you some serious damage. This will also give you a boost to your aoe farming should you pull too much... like me

- Potent Spirit/Spirit Builds: I remember when you had to stack spirit to regen, they are making mages get a boot from spirit now in the form of +crit rating. Looks interesting, maybe they will be able to justify the spirit on the tiered gear again :)

- Improved Water Elemental: Huge dps boost for pve frost mages, it now lasts 60 seconds on a 3 minute CD and has more mana.

- Mage Armor reduces the effects of harm effects by 50%: muahahahaha @ the locks. Frost armor use to be the pvp armor of choice, but now if you see a caster group you can pop this on and give them a run for their money. Hopefully this can end Lock dominance over mages, but I doubt it.

Ok, so, mages look pretty good, but they are going play very much the same way, pew pew from after, just a few new tricks up their sleeves, so let's move onto warriors. I'm going to look at this from a prot pally/raid leader point of view, I'll let you warrior mains break down everything :)

- Vigilance: wow, +5% dodge to the MT is going to be sweet. If you are capable of attacking while this is up (it says lasts until canceled) then it's going to make warriors the ultimate OT's for progression content. Who in there right mind wouldn't want 5% more avoidance for hard hitting, fast swinging bosses? Yes plix, and make it stack.

- Bloodbath: this is more interesting for the arena, deals damage and makes enemies bleed, but 4x to enraged targets. Obviously warriors get enrage, and apparently rogues and druids can was well, and what about bestial wrath? If all these count as "Enraged" in regards to this skill, popping "I win" buttons in the arena is going to be a double edged sword.

-The new Execute, 1315 + 30 per rage, on a 100 rage execute that's 3865 base damage, or an 8503 crit with impale talent. Oh, and should I mention sudden death where your crits have 30% chance to allow you to use Execute >20% health on the target? Bah, I might as well expect spamstring/executes from all warriors in the arena now, my poor priest won't live.

Ok, this is getting long, I think DK's will get their own blog later this week, tune in for part two later: Priests will get a nice over view as I've been playing one a lot lately ^.^

A.K.A Emo-bear (thanks Klimpen)

First of all, damn you Klimpen for calling me that, granted, some of it might be true, but not really. I went on a mission to figure out what "Emo" really meant, and here we go (Go Wiki that is)!

So, apparently, Emo started out as a hardcore punk rock -- that's really not me (Punk Rock Bear?!?) Yeah, whatever. After that it apparently became synonymis with "grunge" music before coming into current form as an "overly emotional" person. Now, I don't know if what I feel is "overly emotional" as compared to "completely apathetic" toward WoW right now. So, let's get the facts out in the open:

#1 Messy guild splitting, no one is ever happy. We're back to 10 mans, some people joined other guilds, some people are bitter that they joined these guilds (and used us as a farm guild), some people, who knows (and better yet who cares :) )

#2. Arena and BG's are very very repatitive and old, I ground out S1 on my pally and priest, now I have to grind out s2 on them again? No thanks, I'd rather refresh TS chatbox over and over every 5 minutes.

#3. I'm a Ret Pally. Need I say anymore?

#4. I'm a Priest. Need I say anymore? Ok, I will, I'm also a mage. Way to go picking the least OP classes in the game.

#5. 5-man burnout. It's fitting, but true, I have no urge to do any 5 mans, 10 mans, hell, I'm sick of HKM/Gruul on my pally.

#6. Mace stun is bullshit when I'm trying to cast a heal /emorage w/ punk music

So yeah, when you roll all this up, I'm really apathetic to wow, I'm taking a bit of a break to get life back in order and finish my thesis. I'm working on a Manuscript for a high end journal as well; it's a little nerve wracking knowing what kind of people are going to be reading your work, but gotta do it sometime.

In the stead of wow, I started playing a different MMORPG www.dofus.com It's a fun little flash game, it's big on the grinding, which caters to my OCD. I play a lvl 153 Iop (Warrior Class) and I whack shit with a over-sized sword. Generally, it's all win. Ok, I'm back to work on this paper, see you ladies in the chatbox.

Day 1 as a Prot Warrior

Ok ok, so, as some of you know, I've tried MS/PVP and I've tried PvE Fury on my warrior, couldn't get a feel for it, thought about canning him, so, my last ditch attempt to save him....

PROT! That's right, I turned my warrior into a tank (I have two, I'm masochistic and I like it). I dropped a few hundred gold, crafted his tankatronic goggles and gemmed the gear I'd collected from quests/crafting and threw down. He's only ~40% avoidance and 477 defense, but I'm still using some of the fury gear (Shoulders and Back) from my last adventure. He's sitting at 13000 AC with ~11.5k hp unbuffed, it's not too shabby, he needs some work before I tackle Kara though.

I tanked regular bot and regular arc last night, Arc was actually easier cause there are more single pulls than aoe pulls, and I was in a better groove by the end of the night. My healer was a full t5 priest and kept me up with renew and PoM -- quite funny actually, he was alt-tabbed out a lot, heh. All in all, it's a lot more button mashing than my pally, and tab-dev spam is a little more finger intensive than consecrate and ZZzzz. We'll see how it goes, maybe I'll keep playing him, maybe I'll can him, I still don't know yet.

My top ten WoW moments.

Eh, I'm trying to get into the writing mood today, so I decided I'd do something fun to get my fingers warmed up, so here is the ten of the top "Muggs Moments" in WoW.

10. At level 62 and prot spec'd, started zerging the mobs in Strath to get my holy water, eventually the guildees felt sorry for me and helped.

9. Pugged Scholo at lvl 63 to get my charger, and promptly quit the above guild because they promised to help me and never did. Oi, that got their attention finally ^.^

8. Downing Onyxia for the first time on my Mage... and I stood next to an overzealous destro lock, not a good idea when she breathes fire.

7. Two manning Onyxia for 15 minutes on my Pally with a resto shammy dpsing/healing.

6. Realizing all that t5 loot I'd been oogling and trying on from the vendor was actually on my toon, not in the dressing room window. I promptly stopped oogling after that.

5. Main tanking Mags for the first time and about pissing myself when I took a 10k crushing.

4. Taking 3x 10k non-crushings from Azaglore and dieing instantly in a pile of goo then laughing at Mags as he crushed me for 6k the next day.

3. "Don't worry guys, I'm far enough from the bear... Oh crap,he pulled, heal me heal me, I got troll phase!" and <3 minutes later he was nuked by a destro lock that had two heroisms and 1.9k dps.

2. Bubble-hearthing on Vashj during the last wipe of the night, got some serious lawlz cause I was tanking her at the time ^.^

And finally, my best moment in WoW:

1. Progression MTed Gruul, 3rd pull of the first night of attempts ^.^ Not to mention the "SHUT THE %#@ UP AND KILL HIM OR DIE" I yelled on vent as I charged him with half the team chit chatting and not paying attention :D

Honorable Mention: Watching A'lar be reborn after a meteor is wicked cool looking.

As a side note: Paladin's can tank him, no worries there, plenty of damage coming in from the warstomp crushings/regular hits to keep me topped off, I popped a pot at Mark 3 just incase though. We dropped him in 3:46, with one of the top dps, our main warrior tank, and #1 spriest missing. All in all, I'm happy with the takedown. We got three tries at Aza, got him to 38%, he will be dieing next time we see him, Emanon is back in the groove.

We're going to try 4/6 MH, then 3/9 BT to get some more loot then go back and kill Vashj and Keal finally /woot.

I haven't posted in a while, been occupied with work and what not, trying to get my master's done and then trying to push content in the evenings raiding. Humm, what's happened... we've had a lot of guild turnover, we've gone 5/6 in SSC (1/5 in hyjal :P) and almost got the bear mount since I last posted.

I'd like to come in here and gloat about the Leo fight, with some awesome tanking from me and my warlock pal, we managed to pull off a first night kill of Leo two weeks ago and killed him second attempt last night, unfortunately, some trigger happy dps got themselves killed and he enraged at 6% and quickly sliced everyone apart during a whirlwind. But eh, when we killed him that was 9 different people that had gotten tier 5 tokens this week, not really a bad deal (we also cleared VR and Sol in The Eye). I think we had a few non-token items go to offspec and I picked up a peice for my resistance sets (Seal of Danzalar from Lurker) -- I got the Brighthelm of Justice for healing and the cloak off tidewalker for ret.

Speaking of Ret, I'm closing on 700 str when I'm raid spec'd! I'm managing to nip at being hit and soft expertise capped now too, I did a stress test of my ret build on Zul'jin 2 weeks ago and pulled off a nice 800 dps, which isn't bad for being in table scraps and pvp gear in my mind.

Ok, I'm going to save you all from a rant about wiping on trash, I just felt like I needed to say something this mornin.

P.S. Stay tuned for my Ret PvP guid coming soon =o

Coming of age as a prot pally.

I sat here this weekend and pondered a few thinks, mostly looking back on the week of raiding I had, and one critical moment stood out at me -- I lost aggro to my OT during a silence on gruul. I can't begin to express in words the detestation you feel when you realize that the game mechanics just crushed your characters soul (and not a crushing blow melee hit either). So you might ask yourself, how did this happen? well, I think I can sum it up in: low spell damage + silence + OP warrior offtank. The Silence and OP warrior *cough* fearghus *cough* are self explanatory, the spell damage, I wish was so easy.

Low spell damage you say? well, I say brand new healers on a farm night right? you say oh snap, get that EH gear out right? Well, the problem lays therein, I had to stack my "Warrior stat" gear to survive because the healers were underpowered -- felt like progression night again. Well, for me, this is like -60 spell damage, (Should be about 30 tps according to EJ) but given Gruul's slow attack speed (less HS charges used) and the ground slams (less melee and less consecrate) it got messy.

So what is this coming of age I speak of? It's the day where you realize you can't wear all warrior gear with a spell damage weapon and hold aggro over the dps or even the OTs. Back when we started 25 mans, the dps was barely pushing me, but now every fight I have to go all out even as a pally (damn this badge gear they got!) to hold aggro, and the warrior gear SBV doesn't scale for me sadly. So, back to the stroy, I slipped on my pocket watch for Mags and kept the spell damage gear on, and no one got close to my threat -- of course my top two healers were back in the fight too in place of the new people, so I felt a little better.

At the end of the night, I realized my days of collecting warrior loot are dwindling, and my future TPS is going to blow people out the water once I hit t6 content and finally upgrade to something that packs a nice punch. Oh, and nerf batted Maggy coughed up a title or me :D

What to do when tanking hurts.

Where to start... humm (and yes, I know you're going to see this Fear, but I think you know already) It seems that my urge to tank is dwindling... well, maybe not so much tank, as being prot spec 24/7. Can I take a beating, hold aggro, power a party through an instance? -- yep, but at what cost. So you prolly wonder, what is the cost? The cost is time... the time it takes to kill things, the time it costs to eat to heal yourself, the time it takes to grind dailies to respec so you can pvp... of course, time is the currency of wow, so it makes sense that this is was the tanks have got to pay.

Anyways, I digress from the point, it's just turned into the same ole same ole everytime I tank something. I've memorized all the pulls in Kara, Gruuls, and even the first 1/2 of TK and SSC, so now, that we're not really killing any new bosses, I just go in there and nonchalantly make the pulls and hell, I've wiped the raid 2x already cause I've pulled faster then the healers could get there (but I still blame them for wasting time whining about patterns on the mobs).

I healed for 3 months, then burned out. I tanked since August, I'm hitting burn out again. What's left? - Ret is left, but too many people are "lolret" even though I out dps them, or they want me tanking cause I'm, well, as Fearghus puts it "a black hole of threat."

So, I'm here, I'm still prot spec'd, I'm suppose to go to SSC for the next two nights, to what will prolly be wipes because people can't pull their heads out of the dirt and pay attention... yay.

Ok, so I know it's been three weeks since I blogged, been busy, but I figure it's time to get back into it. I had some RL issues to deal with, took some time away from raiding, and then came back in a flurry of raiding this week.

Monday night, 2 hour 45 minute plow clear of Kara, got some badges that I used to buy the Veteren's Bracers for my ret set, I cried from happiness when I realized I didn't have to go back into WSG (now I need to grind AV weekend to get my boots and belt and my ret set is fully epic).

Wed we dropped Lurker, took a shot at tidewalker and 2% wiped, I died a little inside, but I know he's going to die a little inside this week when we kick his butt.

Last night, oi, ZA was a cakewalk till ZJ, couldn't get him down. The commendation killed me the first 3 attempts, the spike damage would cause it to proc and I would eat an overpower and die everytime, as soon as I took it off bear phase got easier... a lot easier. But there was some crazy aggro issues coming into P4.... we wiped there 3 times cause of rampart aggro even with a consecrate down and me shoving a judgment in his face, I still lost people. I went to bed pissed last night because of it all. Blah, I'll rant about this later.

Warrior vs. Paladin Part 2

Anyways, more thought into this, first of all, I never said Paladins > Warriors as a general statement, but I did say Muggs' ability to play a pally >>>> Muggs' ability to play a Warrior.

It's not so hard to see, I sit here and remember that my pally has been prot for about 6 months now (healbot before that), I've successfully main tanked every boss we've killed in the game short of two (I'll discuss later) and I know exactly what I need to do and when, I know the size of my consecrate so well, that I can consecrate with CC <1m from the edge of the AoE zone and never break it. I get it all done pretty easily, shield, judge, shield, consecrate, repeat... occasionally dropping seal of wisdom on a target or seal of light depending on who is around and what's going on. Pretty much simple in my mind, but I'm sure anyone that picked up the controls of Muggs after tanking as a warrior for a year would have the same difficulties as me going onto my warrior.

Now, this is also partially spurred by the discussion about "what tank is better for what fight" thread going on down below. We're only a t5/ZA guild, but I've tanked every boss for a successful kill except Nightbane and Zul'jin -- and Zul'jin was a 1% wipe on progression night, imo, that's close enough to a kill to almost count. Nightbane? well, the warriors have an easy time with him while I rock the adds. I'd say Solarian is the same way as Nightbane, but our shammy/moonkin always ends up pulling aggro and face tanking her anyways, meh. Oh, also, those Crystalcore buggers in TK -- Spell Reflect > Them, those things hurt so much when you have to eat the overcharge, I never want to tank one again unless I have to - arcane resistance pots aren't cheap.

Humm, anyways, OH! I calculated my tps similar to the way Cider did on Gorefiend, and I got a calculated 984 tps on Void Reaver this week, I'm quite happy with that number (491 dps to top it off!). I was at about 410 base spell damage, shat flask (+70), wizard oil (+40), Ret Pally (+10% holy damage) and imp. judgement of the crusader (+250ish). What enhance shammies are to warrior tanks a ret pally is too me... anyways, I'm quite happy, I popped Avenging Wrath and saw my threat jump the 1200+ tps range a few times, that always makes me smile. And a neat little trick, VR's attacks are slow enough you can throw hammer of wrath at him between swings, can't beat the extra 2k threat from a hammer! Ok! Muggs is going back to work and praying his computer holds out for a few more weeks.
