Slow times

As the guild leader of a casual group of friends, I have come to accept the slow times that happen. Everyone deals with real life at some point, and the rest of the guild slows as a consequence. Over the last few months, our 9 regular raiders have dwindled to 6-7 due to jobs/schooling/family.

Our high-water mark was Jan 14. Shade of Aran was downed as was the Chess event. Things looked real good for a real life group of friends. Unfortunately, it could not last as our primary healer and off-tank (husband and wife) hit tax season (job) and children (getting Timmy the 11 year old to sleep isnt as easy as it used to be). I, the guild's main-tank, have also had 3 weeks where work interfered with our regular starting raid night (wednesday).

We had our dps warrior quit the guild, then subsequently join back 11 days later because we were not able to raid enough. I guess his wife (secondary healer) might have talked him back into joining.

Last night was the worst night in about 5 months. 8 of us worked our way to Opera with 2 pugs and subsequently wiped 5 times on Romulo and Julianne. This was mainly due to me not recognizing early enough that Romulo must be farther from our dps off-tank than from our regular druid off-tank. Live and learn. We lost the pugs quickly (no surprise) and could not get a good mix to fill the spots. The dps warrior blamed the failure on our two missing people. "They should have been here," he stated. I had to pull him aside and go over the purpose of the guild.

Our casual guild does not recruit. We do not turn people away, but we do not actively recruit. Subsequently, the few players outside of our friends who have joined have left for bigger and better gaming situations. I do not blame them in one bit. Nor should our members blame them or our other members for not being able to raid as much as many of us would like to.

In conclusion...Casual guilds of close friends will probably not be able to progress as fast as even the members of that guild want to. But the friendships created, in my opinion, far outweigh the trials and tribulations of further progressing "hardcore" guilds.

It is nice to see someone putting friendship and good times in front of progression while still desiring to raid. Good for you!

It warms my heart to read a blog like this, not least because as GM of my current guild, I'm crying inside when people whine that we can't do SSC because some of our raiders have the nerve to have a life outside WoW. I just wish everyone was as understanding and based in reality as you.
