Calling all computer nerds...

Ok, now before anyone tells me off for calling you nerds... just know I <3 Nerds
I need some internet help! Its kind of a vent too, so blog it? Ehh why not?
Ok, so I have had MAJOR internet issues. I did have high speed cable, however was having constant lag and d/c issues. It was driving me nuts and I couldn't play WoW very well. The router was replaced, and also the cables, no improvement. After running tests, the signal was all over the place.. sometimes just fine, sometimes not even any signal at all. So I gave up, decided to go to 7mb DSL because that is my only other option and I was hoping for something a little more consistant.
Ok, so yesterday the DSL gets set up!! YAY. New modem, wireless router is like 2 weeks old. I play for 15 minutes and d/c.. WTF?? I didn't have the bad lag that came along with the d/c's on cable.. but I d/c'd probably 5-6 times over 2 hours. Every time the brand new DSL modem showed no internet connection. WHAT THE CRAP??? I am so confused. The only thing they had in common was the same ethernet cable, which I changed out.. but still no improvement...
So if cable d/c's me, and I completely replace everything and change to DSL which is running on a phone line, and Im still d/cing-- what on earth could the issue be? Im stumped.
The only last thing they have in common is an old power strip.. but if it were say the power shorting out, d/cing the modem.. wouldn't I have issues with other stuff shutting off too?
I am so mad... and clueless. I need help

Computers and similar equipement are like the canaries of dirty power--they crap out from dirty power before anything else. And its little blips like what you describe that are the symptom.
if you have the money and no other ideas, pick up a good power conditioner and see if it fixes it. It will also provide back up power in case of a power loss altogether.Posted 01-17-2008 at 09:14 AM by Leytur

I've recently noticed that when I get power issues (low voltage - tension coming from AC line), the first thing that "fails" on my computer is the onboard network adapter (the legend "Cable is disconnected" appeared).
As of other reasons, spyware/virus is the most you will hear.
More:
- Cable from modem/router --> PC?
- You have a wi-fi router in the middle ? (so do I :P)
- Detail a bit of your network schematics

its probably power supply dear after reading your symptoms. What kinda watt/amplitude power supply do you have running on your comp? I used to have all sorts of problems with my vid card and network cuz my powersupply was too low, swapped it out and never had a problem again (my power supply would cut power to the vid card fan, which had its own separate power cable to the mobo, and in turn would cause my vid card to fry and result in freezing)
try that out, and a cheaper/easier alternative is what leytur suggested, just get a backup power conditioner (one of those fancy pants surge protectors) that will flow power to your computer even if your electricity wiring in your house is screwy.Posted 01-17-2008 at 10:23 AM by Kazeyonoma

It looks to me like the problem is one of a couple of things.
First of all, forget the PC, I can quite confidently say that isnt whats causing the problem as you have said yourself, The modem is showing no connection.
So
1) Microfilter, You should have got one of these with your modem , It splits the Phone Signal and DSL signals so you dont get any interferance on either piece of equipment, You should Have you modems DSL cable connected into the filter, And then the filter into the phone socket. If you have already got this, Try another one as it could be faulty.
2) How many phone sockets do you have in your house? If its more then one is the Modem Connected into the Master socket? The master socket is where Incoming phone signal is at its highest, also it shouldnt be tainted with any excess noise which can be caused on Internal phone wiring that normally plagues any phone extensions. If at all possible, Try and make sure your Modem is Plugged into this socket only.
3) Is there anything your ISP can do? Where I work we have remote management of the DSL part of a phone line, we can change settings which can give a more Stable connection, so it might be worth getting onto your ISP's Tech department and see if there is anything they can do.
4) Is it a problem with the phone line itself? There may be a problem with the phone cable from where you are, to where it connects into your countrys phone network(the exchange) Usually the responsibility of fixing this falls to a national phone company(i.e BT in the UK, who manage the phone network) But Some times its different. Again, its worth calling your ISP to check.
I work in broadband technical and see problems like this everyday, if you want any more help then drop me a PM and ill see what i can do.Posted 01-17-2008 at 11:48 AM by adrenalize

Bear-- I don't use a land line for phone, just a cell-- but its not the phone line, because the same issue happened when it was running on the cable. It has to be something seperate from the cable or phone lines.Posted 01-17-2008 at 12:16 PM by Enelrad

First as Adrenalize said ensure that you have a noise filter installed on each phone jack.
Also it could be bad power so invest in a new powerstrip for your modem and computer.
Did your modem not have a connectivity light each time you d/c'ed? If that is the case then it is either bad power or low signal getting to your modem.
If it were your nic(Network Interface Card) your modem would still have a DSL light when you D/C.
Is your computer close to your wireless router and does it have good signal?Posted 01-17-2008 at 04:45 PM by Silentslayer

The connectivity light would go out each time there was some sort of a call coming through without a filter, and low signal strength on the phone line would cause it as well.
That is a fairly common issue with cable, especially with comcast as they are upgrading their entire network across the US and frequent interupts and even outtages are the norm until mid 2010. So the two could be completely unrelated.
The cheapest option would be to buy the filters and put them on all you phone lines, there are also signal strength testers you could get at an electrical/telecommunications supply house and probably at radioshack that could tell you wether that is the problem or not, after that the dirty power is probably your best bet, and it most likely if you
1)Live far away from the nearest sub-station.
2)Live in a house more than 30ish years old
3) Live in a house with a drop in Service (Electricity comes directly from a power line instead of underground)
4)There is some electrical service equipment that is known to have problems like this, namely Federal Pacific.Posted 01-18-2008 at 07:11 AM by Ceravantes
